How much does a Speech and Language Therapist charge privately in the UK?

I think I have been ripped off.
Paed reckons DD needs SLT - I actually disagree ... but we are moving to Aus in the New Year so I decided to get her assessed by an SLT privately so that I could go armed with any info to new GP in Aus.
Anyway, the Hour she spent with DD was very interesting and informative .... I thought DD did really well, but the SLT didn't say either way whether she would need any therapy when we move.
She charged NZ$170 (50 pounds) for the session which I thought was a bit steep but when I asked about the report at the end (to take with me to Aus) she said that would be an extra charge of NZ$110 (another 35 or so quid)

So, basically she charges $170 an hour (50+ pounds) and I have nothing on paper to take with me ... The whole charge would be $280 (100quid) for the session and a report

Does this sound a lot or is this standard (bearing in mind that this is NZ and $280 is A LOT of money ... it has cost me $180 to see a Paediatrician before and I have got a report from that) ...

I thought she lived in a rather swanky house ....

DH pissed off with me because of this

Hmm,I'm a sdalt although in UK and not in private pracice but it doesn't sound a lot to me.

We didn't do a 12 week night class to learn our trade you know.

Hang on,I'll find a link to the most reputable website for salts in private practice in UK..

heavenlyghosty · 10/12/2006 19:00

Thanks Moondog

Yeah but the most we have had to spend on a Specialist (ie DOCTOR) was $250 (but we could claim that on our health insurance)

Here

heavenlyghosty · 10/12/2006 19:28

Thanks Moondog ...
Thinking about it, if I thought DD had a real problem I wouldn't even question the money ... and nor would DH ... but we don't think she does really ... so I suppose that is why I am baulking at the cost.

Moondog, would you be able to give me a list of sounds children SHOULD be able to say at certain ages?
I feel my Paed seems to be determined to find a problem with DD ... when actually I think she is fine ... He has put her through all sorts of tests that I think have been unnecessary all because she is tall

I pay sodding loads, £65 a session which is approx an hour. But she comes here and she is absolutely brilliant with DD who has made loads of progress in the 6 sessions she has had. So I'm gritting my teeth and we're carrying on for a further 6 by which time I think she will be sorted.

Jimjams2 · 10/12/2006 19:47

I've paid 55 quid an hour (SE) and 35 quid for 40 minutes (Devon). More for assessments and reports. The 35 quid was VERY cheapp though (althout not when seeing her every week for 2 years - alrthough she was excellent.

Moondog am about to start a thread for you.

some SALT charge what they like cos they know the waiting lists are miles long and know that some parents will pay to get speech sorted out.(cos they have the £) But not all are money grabbing, there ar some who are in it for results not £, cos health service ones r paid very poorly considering the amount work they do.
Think its over £50 a session round here

moondog · 10/12/2006 20:50

Ghosty, there is a definite pattern of sounds that children should acquire at certain times but I can't really go into it here.
(Well I could, but would have to charge.)

A salt should be able to do this with you though.
It would take 30-60 mins to understand the basics.

I don't think that anyone other than a salt who specialises in this field (in your case it sounds like paediatric phonological disorders)can tell you if there is/isn't a problem with speech and language,in much the same way that only a paediatrician could give you accurate information on something like chicken pox or similar medical issues.

ds2's sounds came in all in the wrong order, which was why he was dxed with a speech disorder (a lot of sounds were missing as well). He did manage to sort himself out although we had about 2 sessions with ds1's private SALT and did some very laid back practice with him. Now, almost 5 his "k's" and "g's" are odten substituted (by b or d - especially at the begining of words), otherwise he's fine.

Moondog- I started a thread for you in other subjects.

DS2 went to sprivate SALT for the summer term . a Group session of two hours each week, about 4/5 children - £58 per session.

Reports and iniatlly assessmenst were on top of this .

To see an ENT consultant privately for him it was £165 - in there 10 minutes !
