My 2 and half year old seems very advanced for her age, her speech is better than most her age and she is doing so well is all areas however she seems to jump and flap her arms quite often. She's done it since a baby and I've always thought it was through excitement but now she wakes in the night and does it and makes odd noises or just talks to herself for hours at a time. No amount of telling her to stop or punishment will prevent it. Should I be concerned?

Does she go to a nursery or childminder, have they said anything about the arm flapping? You say that her speech is advanced - but can she hold a conversation ie doesn't repeat what you say but answers, ask questions, etc?

How is her eye contact and socialising with other children?

If the arm flapping and jumping a behaviour that worries you mention it to health visitor or gp.

Nursery haven't mentioned it. Yes she has full conversations with you and asks lots of questions. She plays with other children so she is fine with socialising. X

You have punished her for it? Why?

I don't think it's an issue, some children will have strange ways to release stress or show excitement. I wouldn't punish though, just maybe show her a way of expressing it verbally, just by using language and encouraging her to use her words. There is no point in punishing her for a behaviour that is involuntary. Has she had a two year check by the nursery?
