2.2 year old wants to drink 4-7 bottles at night

He was always a great sleeper, he drank one bottle of warm milk before bedtime then he slept till 5/6 am had another bottle and fell asleep till 8/9. But for a week now he wants to drink 3-4 bottles before bedtime and then 2-3 bottles in the night.. His first words in the morning is "thirsty"
I tried giving him more to drink during the day but it made no difference, the last two nights I told him he is only allowed two bottles before bedtime and one during the night (I mixed 1/4 milk with water) and my heart was hurting because he fell asleep crying because he wanted to drink..

Should I be worried that something is wrong with him or is he just in growth spurt time.

I would cut the bottles completely. he doesn't need milk all night he's "feeding" more than a new born.

a cup with breakfast and a cup of warm. milk at night is more than enough. he doesn't need anytbing. it's either habit or there's something that requires medical attention. either way I'd go cold turkey and if he cries he cries.

Also, it is terrible for his teeth. Definitely go cold turkey, I did a dummy fairy thing with my dd. All bottles have to go in return for present etc.

Tea? Did you mean to put that or was it a typo? He is too young to be drinking tea

Moohoomeltdown · 14/11/2015 21:37

Tea?

Seems like an awful lot of overnight fluids. Good advice on here. I'd have him to the docs when you can. Is his room hot overnight? Is he eating salty foods? Just other ideas.

Let us know how you get on OP.

Fwiw, it's easy to sit on a forum and say oh stop this, oh stop that, oh that needs to change... but it's very difficult when your precious little one expects something and is crying heartbroken for something. It's really tough so you have my sympathy but once medical is ruled out you need to make a change. It's like anything - sleep associations, dummy etc, breaking habits is hard but short if you're consistent. It's up to a week of hell then they just get it and resettle. I hope he is ok and gets the all clear from docs.

Dilute the milk?

More water than milk.

firefly78 · 14/11/2015 21:58

Tea? Surely not?

WSM123 · 15/11/2015 21:49

my immediate thought was diabetes but I see other are on to it and already suggested it

EliGold · 16/11/2015 17:12

hartmel any update?

Moohoomeltdown · 16/11/2015 20:17

Update OP? Did you get to docs?

hartmel · 17/11/2015 00:03

Went to the doctor who ordered a blood test right away.
Will get the result in 2-3 days..

I tried giving him the milk just in a cup but he refused it. So I think it is more out of comfort. Last night he only had his one bottle milk diluted with water. ( as I'm trying to get him of the bottle) and he slept till 7 in the morning..

Good luck op

guineapig1 · 17/11/2015 06:38

I'm glad that the doctor is checking him out, always better to be over-precautious I think. Hopefully it will just be a phase he is going through!

Moohoomeltdown · 18/11/2015 20:42

Sounds hopeful OP. Let us know what results are, it's good that doc ordered tests and took it seriously Flowers

A little update:
Saw the paediatrician yesterday and we are still waiting for the blood results from this week but he said that based on the blood test taken in September everything is normal..

He was happy that he gained weight (my son didn't gain weight from March till September then he gained within two month 1 Kg)

What he thinks is, because we sold our house beginning of November and have to move out by first week of December and I'm busy packing he wanted attention and the only attention he thought he would get by asking for to drink.. We are back to 1 or 1 1/2 bottle per night. And the doctor was fine with it.
