sudden reaction to tomatoes - 5yr old getting rashy mouth..

So this is odd. My DS, nearly 6, loves tomatoes. We usually eat raw ones several times a week and regular tom based pasta sauces. So somewhat surprised that it looks like my son is now sensitive to them - getting red and a bit sore looking round his mouth. He then keeps rubbing his lips so they take a long while to get better.
About 90% sure it's toms causing the problem (10% that it might be apples) so will eliminate them totally for the next two weeks to see what happens.
My question is, is this a thing? It seems very weird to me...

Sounds like oral allergy syndrome. Is he ok with cooked tomatoes?

It's quite common to be sensitive to the acid in some fruits, including tomato so it might just be that. DS has a couple of true food allergies but he also sometimes gets a bit red when hehas some tomato based foods but not ketchup sadly.

Very sensible to exclude for a short while and then reintroduce, if you think there may be a reaction to apple do the same experiment with that. Keep a food diary with a record of reactions (we took photos of the most severe reactions). Have some piriton on hand to give if there is a reaction.

www.allergyuk.org/oral-allergy-syndrome/oral-allergy-syndrome - tomatoes are listed

I had this as a child and then developed allergic reactions to oranges and strawberries. Grew out of all the allergies by the time I was around 10.

I loved strawberries so would sometimes steal one and just thole out the rash.

Thanks for the link demented. I'll see about getting my LO to the doctors & carry on avoiding raw apples and tomatoes for now. Good idea about the piriton and photos thegiddylimit. Didn't even think of piriton - doh!
Mumsnet at it's best. Ta! Flowers
