Two year old using a booster seat?

Not sure if this is the right place for this, but have a query about booster seats for small kids.

My DS turned two a few months ago and he and all his similarly aged friends will be moving up a room at nursery. This has gone much faster than usual, I gather, due to crowding in the younger room, but since all his friends will move with him I'm not uncomfortable with that.

However, I've just gotten a permission slip for a trip for his new room saying that they'll be using a coach that doesn't take car seats and that I should provide a booster seat of necessary. I wasn't planning on buying one of these for years as I was under the impression they were for much older / bigger kids. And I'm not all that comfortable thinking of my DS rocketing along the motorway in a child restraint that's not his size.

Am I being silly to worry about this? Can booster seats be used safely with kids of ~14kg?

I wouldn't be happy with that, to be honest. It's one thing having your two-yr old on your own lap for a short taxi or bus journey, IMO it's another thing giving permission for 3/4 adults to take your child, as one of a larger group (presumably), on a coach trip where you won't be able to assess the specific risk.

Sorry, didn't address the point about booster seats - using a booster wouldn't give me any more confidence, personally, but my 24-mth old is in an ERF seat and the thought of him in a booster is a bit scary.

Thanks. My boy's in an ERF car seat, too. I've had him on my lap on holiday, etc., when it couldn't be avoided, but a half an hour on a coach without 1 to 1 supervision does give me concerns.

Our nursery are great, though, and I'm a first time mum, so I need a bit of confidence to assume my nervousness should trump their risk assessment. Have been in touch with them already to express concerns, but would be helpful in terms of deciding whether to make DS skip the trip to have a sense of my place along the Sensible-Paranoid scale!

I totally know what you mean! have you double-checked that it's actually legal to have kids of that age/weight unrestrained in a coach/nimbus? It guess it must be, otherwise they wouldn't be suggesting it, but it does sound crazy to me. What's the alternative? Could he maybe stay in the baby room for the couple of hours that the trip happens? Not ideal but hey ho.

They need to be over 15kg. If he isn't heavy enough, the seatbelt won't activate. Talk to nursery if he is under the min weight.

Many thanks, all. Nursery have said the letter was drawn up for older kids before younger rooms were included. They'll make sure car seats can be fit on the coach.
