Early start!

DD (22 months) had been waking most mornings at 7:30/8:15 (yes I know I was lucky!).

All of a sudden she has decided to wake at 6 most mornings, sometimes even as early as 5!

In the very early days when she woke early we had a "rule" that anything before 6 we class as the middle of the night and anything after is an "acceptable" time to get up.

It's a real shock to the system but I of course accept she's ever changing and this is just yet another one.

The thing is though is that when she wakes each morning she wakes with a real cry, a loud scream/cry. It makes you jump out of bed cause you think something awful' happened.

Surely she can't be having nightmares at the exact same time each morning????

Is something waking her? Boiler kicking in? Car outside being started? If it's exactly the same time, can you set your own alarm for 5 minutes before and see if you can figure out what it is?

Taler · 21/09/2015 12:49

I don't think it's anything specific. Deicnitely not boiler as she wouldn't hear that. Yes, worth a try. Thanks

Stupid question but what about your neighbours? Our neighbours work shifts and, whilst they aren't especially loud (they don't wake me up!)I can always tell when he's on early as ds wakes up nearly an hour earlier.

NickyEds · 21/09/2015 14:31

Also meant to say- 5-6am is an absolute pig of a time isn't it?? If they wake up they aren't tired enough to go back to sleep which they would at say 3 but it makes them grumpy so they nap earlier, then want to go to bed earlier, then wake earlier.....and so it goes on. Ds was going from 7.30-7am until fireman next door changed shiftsAngry

Taler · 22/09/2015 03:32

Don't think it's neighbours but again can't be 100% sure.

It's 03:30 and DD just woke up, again with a full-on loud cry. It's like she's having a nightmare as to cry that suddenly and that loud and that full-on it has to be something pretty horrible to wake her!

Just got her back to sleep (hopefully for the remainder of the night!) and'll be interesting now to see if she still wakes at stupid o'clock! I really hope not! Am bloomin' shattered!!

Sad

I feel your pain. DS has just woken me up crying. He's asleep again now but here I am, wide awake.

Aside from that, has been waking early too (about 5.30) so I have been trying out a couple of things to see if they help.

The first thing I noticed was a lot of the time he woke early his nappy had leaked. So I thought that might be a cause so I have changed to pampers premium protection in a size up (just for nights, still Aldi all the way during the day)

Also, I found he was more likely to wake early if he had been to nursery the day before. He has his tea there earlier than he would at home so I was thinking maybe he could be waking because he's hungry. So last night I've given him a bigger than usual snack before bed time.

He slept until 6.30 the last 2 mornings, with the new nappy and a big carby tea, but he hadn't been to nursery the days before so this morning will be the test.

I will update you in the morning. Could either of these things be a cause for your DD?

Taler · 22/09/2015 06:17

Sadly neither of these things could be what's waking her! I can't see any pattern whatsoever!

And, as you can see, she woke early again, despite waking at bloody 03:30!

I am exhausted!!!! Sad

DS woke up at 5.50
But...

I brought him into bed with me, rubbed his back and gave him s cuddle and he fell back to sleep. He's still asleep next to me now!! Never usually happens!

He was really cold though. It was quite warm when he went to bed so he just had short sleeved pjs on under his grow bag. When he woke up his little arms and hands were freezing bless him. So when I brought him into bed I wrapped him up in my duvet and that seems to have done the trick.

I'll be trying winter pjs tonight, plus the heating on in his room if necessary. See if that might have been the reason for waking.

I assume you have already ruled coldness out?

Taler · 22/09/2015 08:14

Ha! That is a sore subject in our house! Unfortunately DD's room has always from time to time had a bit of a chill in there.

DH doesn't want her growing up drownin in central heating and to be honest neither do I as its really unhealthy. BUT that doesn't mean I want her to be cold and there are so many nights I turn the thermostat up in her room coz it feels cold.

She goes to bed in long sleeve PJs and a 2 tog sleep bag and I do feel her chest and back and they feel warm.

22mo here too, and he's been waking up before 6am for the last two months. A handful of times he's slept till 6-6.30. Mostly it's 5-5.30am. Occasionally he'll go back to sleep after that but will still wake up shortly after 6. I'm suffering with pregnancy insomnia at the moment so if he wakes up at 5 I can't get back to sleep anymore.

Our issue however is waking up for a wee as he's potty trained during the day, and is getting there at night too. So if you have started potty training it could be the reason. He's also cutting another molar. Really hoped they would just come all at once...

The cold could be waking her up too, as it gets coldest just before the morning, and sleep between 4-6 is the most sensitive. DS's room is 18 degrees most nights, and he's sleeping in long sleeved pjs with 2.5 tog back and a fleecy blanket on top. He's not wearing a vest though, but I think I'll buy some of those you can get for toddlers wihtout poppers on crotch.

You have my sympathies, DS has had a few periods of early wake ups, but they would go after a while and he would sleep in longer again. This is the longest so far but I hope it will pass too!

bag, not back!
