Settling in at nursery concerns

DS1 (but not PFB) has started at nursery and is not a happy boy! I was fortunate to have a year off with him but have returned to work 4 days a week. He's in nursery for these 4 days but is very sad!
He cries at drop off and is shattered, he's a fantastic daytime 'napper' (we're talking 2 hours morning and afternoon at home) but there is so much going on at nursery that he's lucky to sleep for 30 mins which means he just so tired. He's only been going for a week and I suppose I'm just seeking some reassurance that it'll get easier and he'll settle!
He's a super happy and placid boy (biased I know) but at nursery they've described him as very emotional and said that he gets quite upset throughout the day. I feel sad they're not seeing the happy side of him that we do and just wondered how long it took other 12 month olds to settle in?

It takes a while. He sounds like he needs more sleep there.
Can he walk yet? My child was also happier once she could walk better and got used to everyone.
I would give it another month before you start to worry.

I think the same about the sleep and he is walking which seems to tire him out even quicker. The problem seems to be that he just won't sleep there as he's too nosey/too much going on so it's a catch 22.

Mt DD (now 22 months) is at nursery 2 days a week. She has been going since she was 9 months.

She too will have great naps at home! 2-3 hours at lunchtime but at nursery I was lucky if she did 40 mins!

The first class she was in though didn't have set nap times. They'd work to my schedule, which whilst good in lots of ways maybe impacted her naps.

Now she's in the next group up she has a tad more structure - they all sleep at the same time, therefore she's going to sleep when it's much quieter and always darker.

IMO they can never really sleep as well as they do at home - too much going on! Plus (for my DD anyway) she's used to going to sleep at home in a nice quiet room with all her teddies in a detached quiet home.
