Too early to potty train 16mo?

My 16mo tells me every time he does a poo in his nappy. My Mum (had 7 kids) tells me now is a good time to try training. He doesn't tell me when he wees but one time we had to collect a urine sample so he had to have a little plastic bag stuck to him inside his nappy. This made it obvious to him when he urinated and he told us when he had done it.... (He was 15mo at this point!) Am I just being lazy by leaving it for now or should I do as my Mum advises?

16 months is very young to potty train, I think around 2 is much more common. My friend has tried as her ds can tell her when he's had a poo but he can't anticipate it so they just ended up with poo everywhere and that's at 21 months (none of the rest of my friends with 20/21month olds are even considering it). The prevailing wisdom seems to be that the longer you leave it the easier and more straight forward it will be. You're certainly not being lazy not doing it now

Thanks for reply. My eldest was trained at 26 months and it was very quick - dry day and night after 2 days. He was telling me when he was going from 18 months but still chose to wait. This little one has told me a couple of times before he has done it but generally tells me after. Will wait until he is closer to two!

It's fine. Ds1 was trained by 15months, ds2 by 18months. We had used semi elimination communication with them since tiny though so they had been sitting in toilet for poos and wees since 6/9months, just not dry at that age obviously

poocatcherchampion · 14/09/2015 20:29

I think it's fine too!

Why not give it a whirl and see? I am about to have a go with a 19 month old who keeps telling me when he's wet or pooey and this week had a few practice potty goes. It's early for some but not others and may or may not work.

Only one way to find out... Hope the carpet survives Smile

Pinkpowderpuff · 15/09/2015 07:27

Ha ha, the carpet isn't even a year old yet..... Had to replace due to eldest covering it in vomit last Christmas! Should have just left bare floor......

One of mine toilet trained herself at 18m... she didn't like the feel of nappies, watched her older brother using a potty (he's a year older) and just copied!
Yes she had a few accidents, but very few and I didn't see the point of keeping a nappy on her when she was clearly interested.

DS2 on the other hand... arghh....

stillnotjustamummy · 17/09/2015 07:22

You have nothing to lose! DD2 more or less trained herself at that age by copying her big sister, then went dry at night at 18months. There were maybe three accidents where she fell asleep in the car but that was it. If it doesn't work, you can always try again later!

Thelushinthepub · 17/09/2015 07:26

Exact same thing happened to us at 16 months, started telling us when he was going to poo and did it. Potty trained fine, there was the odd accident for about 3 weeks. I would absolutely try it

NannyOggsHedgehogs · 17/09/2015 07:37

Mine trained himself at 18 (signs were in place earlier but I doubted myself!) So I would say try it. If you get accidents, or he gets stressed about it, go back to nappies and try again later

It sounds as if your wee one is very conscious of when business has been done and will probably be very receptive to potty training. My boy is almost 1 and he sits on the potty every morning. He doesn't understand, obvs, but he is beginning to associate the potty and a poo.
