18 month old weaned off bottle... Now drinks no milk at all

I couldn't find a good place for this question in the Feed the World section so posted here!

On the advice of his nursery, I have stopped giving my 18 month old bottles and give him sippy cups instead. He love(d) his bottle so it wasn't easy, but he's ok with it now. BUT he is no longer interested in milk.

Anyone know how much milk they're supposed to have at 18 months? He won't drink it at all from the sippy cup. He used to have about 7 ounces before bed, and about 7 ounces when he woke up in the morning.

On the plus side, it means he eats more food during the day.

Same question. My 19mo has 5oz twice a day. But we're giving it out of habit. He has yoghurt most days and cheese, I don't know when, or if to stop offering it.

It's ok so long as he's eating well. You can get calcium in via food, yoghurt etc.

EatDessertFirst · 13/09/2015 08:39

As long as they are getting enough food it shouldn't be a huge problem.

DD gave up milk at 10 months and DS at 13 months and we've had no issues.

What does he drink instead? Offer him milk or water only, give him milk with meals or snacks.

Thanks everyone!

WeAllHaveWings he drinks water only - good idea about offering him milk with meals!

As long as there's enough calcium in his diet otherwise, there shouldn't be a problem. Lucky you I think! Trying to get a baby to give up a bottle when it doesn't want to is hard.

At this old imitating adults is a big thing. We offer a cup of tea (90%warm milk and decaf tea and DS loves it. He also has plenty of cheese addicted and yogurt.

Anyway recent research shows drinking formula and follow on milks creates picky small eaters, so don't stress it!

When my dd moved onto a cup she also became less interested in milk.
I started giving her a cup while we read a bedtime story on the sofa and I said she needed to have a mouthful before I would turn the page.
It worked really well and she just accepted it, I wouldn't have done it if it caused her to be upset.
Worth a try?

The only milk dd ever had was breast milk, and I didn't do extended breastfeeding, she kind of weaned herself off it before one. The only dairy she ever ate was cheese, in quite large amounts, or if I used milk or cream in cooking so she couldn't taste it. Although that was limited as at toddler age went off anything runny/ too sauce like. Wouldn't even touch milkshakes, or yoghurt, or anything of that nature. Neither would she touch any of the alternatives. She does eat ice cream now, but not anywhere near often enough to remotely be a source of calcium. She's 11 and through mainly her cheese addiction consumption, has always had enough calcium.

Neither of mine were interested in milk after 12 months old.
