Three year old's drawings

DD has recently really started to draw. The drawings are quite impressive and she is told how good she is at it.
Whilst showing DP one of her drawings today he noticed that all the people had sad faces and tears coming from their eyes. I felt bad that I hadn't noticed and even worse that my three year old is drawing sad people. Every so often there is a happy face but most of them are sad.
There hasn't been any upset in the family recently.(I m/c in may and august but she never knew about them)
She sometimes gets upset when we go to work but we have both been working since she was 12 weeks old so that,i thought, was just normal to her.
I actually feel quite upset by these pictures and am wondering if there is anything I can do to help her. She is in bed now and fast asleep so I don't want to disturb her.

ANY IDEAS

hehe floating

my dd has been writing her name since she was 2

I suspect it might be the same circles-and-lines name...

janitor that's a bugger - our school will let you miss reception completely if you think your child is not ready - is there no flexibility? what a shame

it does seem very young to start school, i had the same reservations about my ds(5). it really has done him good though, there were a few hiccups but now he really loves it. i wouldn't worry too much about the pictures, children draw all sorts of weird things that you could get worried about!

DD is 3.2 and has just started to draw faces - because her pre-school do a tea-towel at Christmas. We atarted out demonstrating the basic smiley face . The DH and I started to draw along side her and put more detail in our pictures, such as pupils and hair. She picked up on this, but at the moment most of her faces have a straight mouth - so not sure if it's just she can't quite manage curves without them turning into cirlces or what. Actually alot of her facecs look like skuls or pumpkins - ooer.

But whenever I ask her for something and she says now I put my bottom lips out in a sad facec and she comes and wedges it (painfully in most cases) back under my top lip, telling me to 'cheer-up' so she is aware of the difference between happy and sad. Although we have never used 'cheer-up' to her so not sure where that's come from.

honestly all i would do is encourage her pictures, my son didn't learn until 5!

she sounds very arty

Snowman - Please dont worry. My DS is now 4 and 1 month. His drawing is really terrible. his pre school did a teatowel where the children drew themselves, DS's is just a mad mess of scribbles.

We are trying to encourage him to draw and just get used to holding a pencil. Very slowly he seems to be enjoying it, very slowly he seems to be able to draw clearer shapes. He is a million miles away from drawing a person.

I put old wall paper on the floor and pinned to the wall where he draws - done a load of spiders webs recently.

My pc crashed last night and haven't had time to log on till now. DD hasn't drawn anymore so I haven't had the chance to bring it up. All your ideas are fab. I feel better now. That I haven't messed her up completely

Snowman, just wanted to reassure you that my DD2 is nearly 3.3 and her drawing doesn't resemble anything at all, so you're not alone. I feel guilty about it actually because not able to spend so much time with her as did with DD1, who was drawing heads with bodies etc at the same age.

Also, she can only just about recognise her name, let alone write it herself.

My son is 3.5 and all his paintings are like the fast show sketch "Black! Blaacccckkk!"

frenziednester · 11/12/2006 20:51

DS1 will just about draw a 'bod' (circle with 2 sticks for legs) he is 3.3 too, but no where near emotions on drawing yet, but he has always been very concerned about people's moods and asks if we are happy or sad. He is much happier like Mrs S's DS, once he has obliteratted the whole drawing in an opaque colour!! ( I still can't draw myself, though.....)
