Hello, I have a bum-shuffler who is still not walking.
She cruises on furniture and stands by pulling up on furniture.
I posted something similar a few months ago and some of you lovely MNs reassured me that bum-shufflers walk late.
But, I'm pregnant now and would LOVE for her to walk as she's getting heavy and I think she could do so much more if she could walk.
Any tips on how to encourage her? Anyone been to a physiotherapist? What did they get your child to do?
We try to hold her hands and walk with her every day but she often resists and just wants to get back onto her bottom.
I think she lacks confidence so any tips on improving that would be great too.
Really hope she walks soon...
(Ps have been reading/scaring myself about developmental delay! How would I know if it's that vs normal for bum-shuffler??!)

Our DS didn't walk at all till 18 months; he was quite tall, and waited till he could do it properly. I can't remember how he got around previously, crawling I guess - hard to remember, as he is thirty-two now!

They all vary, so don't worry.

My dd bum shuffled and didn't walk until 22 months. She was diagnosed with hypotonia (low muscle tone). We were referred to physio via GP and paediatrician. She's gradually catching up with other children in terms of running, jumping, hopping etc, and the paed said that she'll have completely caught up by the time she's 7.

Go and get your dd checked if you're worried. Health visitor or gp in first instance.

Meant to point out that the bum shuffling was because of the hypotonia. She couldn't physically hold herself in a crawling position. The late walking was also due to hypotonia, but not a consequence of the bum shuffling.

bananapie did your dd cruise with furniture? And walk holding your hand?

Thanks for your message ferguson yes these things all tend to balance out in the end. My dd is actually a tall girl too.

She walked holding two hands then one hand for ages. She was very wobbly at first. She cruised a bit, but preferred hand holding. I think she first pulled up to standing against furniture at about 18 months

Have been trying to get hold of the HV for a week but no reply from them.
I wonder how I know if her delayed walking on her own is normal because of bum shuffling or a problem?
Over the last week she's enjoyed walking holding my hands and tries to run in excitement. Wish I knew!

I would go straight to your Doctor and not bother with a HV just for peace of mind.
