My 3 year old turns three in a couple of weeks and I've been looking at innotab or the leap pad.

What would anyone recommend? I'm totally cluelessness!

TIA

I wouldn't get either they are both crap I'd get a normal cheap tablet instead and download your own games. When my ds was 3 he went in you tube watching the alphabet song and nursery rhymes

Seriouslyffs · 23/08/2015 10:34

Nonono!
Hold off from any tablet for as long as possible. It's just one more thing to moderate and at that age he'll be better off interacting with real stuff. Spend the money on Duplo.

NobleLocks · 23/08/2015 10:52

The thing is she has so many toys.
The tablet was for the long drives I. The car tbh- ie the two hours to her dads

NobleLocks · 23/08/2015 12:09

Buying a tablet as she doesn't need any more toys?

My friend did the same for her son and by the time he was 5 he had a DS, a Wii, an iPod touch and an iPad. How sad.

How about buying her some craft things? And singing songs on long car journeys?

As you can tell, I'm old school Grin. But it's a slippery slope...

gamerwidow · 23/08/2015 13:11

Try this one I've bought it before and very pleased with the quality Yuntab Q88 7 Inch Tablet PC Google Android 4.4 External 3G Wifi Dual CoreDual Camera All... www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00RVFKPR0/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_5FB2vbDG4BE5V
You know you can do craft and play and read with your child AND buy them a tablet. It's not an either or situation Hmm

MazzleDazzle · 23/08/2015 14:03

Can't see why any 3 year old would need a tablet of any kind. Also, giving it to them with a list of conditions (you can only have it at certain times and only for so long) might be hard for a 3 year old to understand and in the long run might be more hassle than it's worth.

I know lots of parents who regret buying their kids tablets so young and wish they'd held off.

We went for the LeapPad 3 after much thinking, similar situation- 3rd birthday, too many toys. We also do long car/ train journeys and go to festivals/ conferences where it'll be useful for her to have it with headphones during long talks. It was on offer in Tesco- I think they had the pink one for £30 recently. My daughter loves her 'Learning Pad' and I like that you don't have to set parental controls, that all the apps and games are educational, and that its easy to use- if she drops it, it's not going to break. She's pretty good at listening when we say she's had enough too

We've got a Leap pad here. Dd probably uses it about 2 times a month if I am honest as I forget to charge it. However when I was comparing the two posters were saying it was more educational than the innotab and a bit faster. Dd is just 4 and likes the Jake and the Neverland Pirates one and Spongebob. We also have the Leap Pen Reader thing, which she really enjoys. I got a set of the books from Oxfam so we've not had to buy anything for it. Be warned though that if you have a Chromebook rather than anything Windows based you won't be able to set up the more interactive parts - I had to go over to a friends house to download the books for the Reader etc.
I use it mainly for long car journeys or if we are out and I don't want her to wear out my phone battery while waiting for food/I am with friends for a bit.
Ignore the nay-sayers - as long as you are doing other things it's just another interactive way for them to learn IMO.

ffffffedup · 23/08/2015 14:55

I agree ignore the nay sayers they use tablets and laptops in school for learning these days it's just the way of the modern world now

AnotherTimeMaybe · 23/08/2015 15:10

I bought the innotab last year... It's really crap no joke, so slow I've never experienced anything like this and as DS1 is used to the speed of ipad I got rid of it, total waste

AnotherTimeMaybe · 23/08/2015 15:14

MazzleDazzle DS1 starting preschool in a couple of weeks and they have laptops daily
Also a 3yo is more than capable of understanding conditions (not time ones of course ) but things like when you put toys away, eat dinner, draw a picture then you can have iPad etc

Fireandicicles · 23/08/2015 15:28

Honestly just buy a tablet like a kindle or hudl if a mini ipad is too much.

It is so multipurpose.

NobleLocks · 23/08/2015 16:53

Thank you all, im very honest in saying she does craft and her horse etc and is active it's for the car.

You don't need all the conditions when they're 3, it's just another toy, another thing to play with. The conditions you give on the lego, or the dolls, or paints, or books or whatever. Tablets really aren't magical devices, they're just another toy. Just because it wasn't part of our childhoods doesn't mean it shouldn't be part of ours childrens.

And yes, get a real tablet, and a good silicone case, which will mean it will survive many drops!

JammyGeorge · 25/08/2015 18:52

We bought ds1 an innotab 3s a while ago when they hadn't been out long. We looked at the leap pad and they both seemed to have roughly the same spec but we plumbed for the innotab as you can download films & DVDs onto it (not easy it's something to do with file formats I think dh did it).

My nephew got a leap pad at the same time and when they were sat together playing them I thought the leap pad looked a better bit of kit, the screen was bigger, brighter seemed a higher resolution when they were side by side.

I think if I was going to buy another I'd go leap pad.

We've certainly had our money's worth and ds2 (aged 2) is now playing with it a lot, as I speak ds1 who is now 5 and his 6 year old friend are sat playing it.

It's taken some hammer as well been thrown in tantrums and dropped down flights of stairs!
