My DS just doesn't seem to grow! I have put off going to the health visitor or GP, because I think they'll just say he's fine and he'll get there eventually. Both dh and I are average height 5'11" and 5'8". DS is the smallest in his class at nursery by a long shot and many of the 2-3 yo tower over him.
On the plus side, he's cheap to run on clothes and shoes - I'm bringing out winter clothes this year he's had from two years ago and has only gone up one shoe size in 18m!! Advice/reassurance would be gratefully accepted

I've got another littley too
DD is just 4 and has only jut gone up to 2-3 yrs for trousers.
she eats like a horse.
But like you say, shoes only need replacing annually

meowmix · 26/11/2006 13:30

are these mothercare sizes because they are enormous! My DS is quite chunky and a 75th percentle for height but 1-1.5 yr pyjamas are big on him from there.

ellesbells · 26/11/2006 13:31

hi tinytotmum. is your ds healthy? does he eat well? if the answer is yes then i wouldnt worry too much he just might be a slow grower and suddenly have a spurt at some point. my dd2 was tiny until she was about 10 years....now shes taller than me at 15!

ayla99 · 26/11/2006 13:36

Its worth getting this checked out. My HV alerted me to the fact that my ds wasn't growing. They have charts to work out how they expect the growth rate to be based on the parents height/weight. We were referred to local hospital and went regularly for some time until they were happy there was nothing to be concerned about.

I wasn't concerned that ds was (still is, now 9) the smallest - I'm barely over 5' myself and dh is small for a bloke. Like you, I was happy not to have to keep buying new clothes but if there is anything wrong the earlier they establish the cause the better.

With any luck they won't find any problems, and like me you'll have the peace of mind that your lo is healthy.

tinytotmummy · 26/11/2006 13:42

Sizes from anywhere! 2-3 is gigantic on him - tried some on the other day as he has about 10 pairs of trousers waiting from him to grow into
He is quite a fussy eater, although started nursery a month ago and is having the cooked lunch that is provided, and is becoming much better at trying at least every veg that is put on his plate. Eats loads of apple, breadsticks, toast, sandwiches, etc.

Don't mean to worry you but I would get it checked out tbh.

mumofhelen · 26/11/2006 21:10

I agree that Mothercare sizes are big. My dd is only just over 2 years and has only just grown out of the 12-18 months range and now fits the 18-24 months range nicely. She too is tall - being just over the 75th percentile. I'm only 5ft3in (1.60m) but my husband is tall, being over 6ft. You could ask you health visitor or GP for reassurance, but I don't know what they can do, other than refer your son to a peadiatrician.

pesha · 26/11/2006 21:11

My dd is the same, she was in 2-3/3-4 clothes (depending on the shop) when she started school aged 5, in fact her pe shorts were 12-18 months!! She hsa no waist and cant wear anything that doesn't have an adjustable waist although she has recently started to grow but only upwards, its as if she's just stretched, as she gets taller she gets slimmer!

But I did keep a check on it when she was younger and spoke to hv about it so I would go and see yours if i were you just for peace of mind if anything

tinytotmummy · 26/11/2006 22:03

Thanks for your responses - I think I will make an appointment with the GP. If they say he's fine at least I'll won't worry about it as much

My ds1 is the same age as yours ttm and he's still wearing 18-24month trousers. I'm not remotely concerned - he's healthy and happy. I've not weighed him for about a year, I know he's growing as he's gradually growing out of things!

Tbh I buy clothes by height and don't take any notice of the age - and trousers are still always too loose!

tinytotmummy · 26/11/2006 22:14

Know what you mean about the trousers, DS's are always way too baggy and the back pockets usually end up by his knees! I'm relieved to hear you're not worried toothyboy. Most of the time I don't, but occasionally when I see him with children of his age I do think "He's soo tiny!"

DD looks like she's going the same way, though. 2 next month and still in 12-18m. My mum said I was exactly the same, so maybe it just runs in the family

Tinytot, yes best to be on the safe side and see the GP.

However! Fairly recently I've had to have a major spend on dd because she's been wearing the same clothes for the last 2 winters! She must have shot up during the summer/autumn because everything was at least one inch short (only matters with trousers obv.) And having bought 5 pairs of trousers in the last 3 months, she's now grown out of 2 pairs already. And she's still is one of the smallest & slimmest in her class.

Be prepared - you could be in for a massive growth spurt too.

indiemummy · 26/11/2006 22:25

wouldn't worry about what size clothes - my 3.5 yo ds is still wearing his 18-24m babygap tshirts, just about, and 2-3y in most things, though on the other hand he has a couple of mini boden tops in 3-4 y which are already snug. It just depends. Most of last winter's clothes still fit him. He is def on the big side and as big as most of the 4 year olds in his school.

In other words - don't worry! You said yourself the doctor will probably not think it is a cause for concern at the moment. Why not mention it to an experienced member of staff at his nursery to see what they think? They will have seen children of all shapes and sizes pass through and may be able to offer reassurance?

My DS1 has just turned 3 and wears 2-3 yrs clothing. He is really skinny and the trousers have to be waist adjustable. ('Next' do great ones)!
He is quite tall and like Pesha's lo, my DS gets thinner as he gets taller.
Get DD checked out with HV for peace of mind. I did this a couple of weeks ago and she was happy with DSs stats.
He is a fussy eater, but is very very slowly gaining weight.

NannyL · 26/11/2006 23:15

donnt be worried... my 4.5 year old charge is still in 18 - 24 month old clothes!

also still in a group 1 car seat... even though in reception class at school!

NannyL · 26/11/2006 23:16

oh and im in size 14 - 15 M&S clothes... size 15 - 16 are too big for me and im 26!

also still in kids shoes size 4!

some of us are destined to be small!

Pann · 26/11/2006 23:36

another littley one over here!

She is 6, 7 y.o. in January and wears 5 y.o. clothes.

I/we try to not make her more conscious of her lack in stature..but she is catching up, albeit very slowly.....

it's probably like most developmental stages, in that they get there in the end, and we don't worry.
