Does this pooing issue sound like colic to you?

Not sure if this could be colic but my 5 week DS has had real problems pooing for the last few weeks. He goes bright red, puts in loads of effort straining bless him but gets nowhere. This makes him really upset, he gets panicky, seems to have stomach pains, flails his arms and legs around, draws knees to chest then arches back and screams. The pedatrician has said is common and has advised us to give him a type of natural suppository, basically a camomile based liquid that we syringe into his bum which is brilliant and gets him pooing within minutes. When he does go he isnt constipated-issue is more he doesnt seem able to get it out himself! Am getting worried though as dont really want to give him this stuff more than once a day but today has been a mare. He wont be put down, is crying, seems in pain and yet he only had a dose this morn. Has anyone else had experience of this? Any advice or reassurances out there? Oh yeah-he has awful wind too.Spends most of day farting. Wakes himself up with it in the night.

Are you bf or ff? Could be a lactose intolerance.

Gio71 · 21/11/2006 21:55

am bf although we give him one bottle of formula (soya based) last thing at night.

Why soya? That can be very difficilt to digest and lots of babies are allergic to it.

nearlythree · 22/11/2006 10:34

Farting is normal, btw.

Hi nearly three
Cut out formula last 2 days and result today was calmer baby, still bit of colic but less and 5 dirty nappies without needing medicine! Thanks for your advice.

Gio - have had exactly the same with my DD (nearly 11 weeks) although DD is now on bottle, had to change milk to cow and gate comfort for digestion issues and has made a big difference.I know this doesn't help you as you are breastfeeding. It is so heartbreaking when they strain and then cry, or fart and then cry....it is getting better and am hoping in the next few weeks will improve more, my thoughts really really are with you coz I felt like my baby was the only one going through this (((hugs)))

Gio71 · 24/11/2006 21:49

Did you give your dd anything Jam77? Have just changed from mylicon to gripe water-seems to have made slight difference this evening. What formula were you giving your dd before changing? Sorry to hear she has suffered as well but like you said its nice to know its not only you going through it! All the other mums I know seem to have babies who are already sleeping 6 hours at night, wide awake and sociable in the day and no colic issues.Am obviously not wishing it on them but can be disheartening My ds doesnt sleep at night due to colic, collapses in the day with exhaustion a lot of the time so then isnt tired at night. I fell asleep with him in my arms last night and have worried all day about what could have happened if he'd gone under duvet or I'd rolled on him. Am now rambling arent I and going off the point. i put it down to lack of sleep....

Gio - sorry not been on here at weekend, nothing worse than posting, hoping for a reply then nothing - sorry hon I know exactly what you mean about other people and their "miracle" babies.....they never cry (yeah right) sleep all night (that's coz you put them to bed one o clock in the morning) and just love going everywhere and doing everything.....take my advice Gio and don't believe it all, I think there is so much pressure to be the perfect mum and have the perfect baby that people will often not admit to their baby being anything other than perfect, and we all know that just isn't true. It's like my doctor said (when I took DD re her belly and changing her milk) if a baby doesn't ever cry then there is something wrong as it's their only way to communicate. It's far healthier to have a baby that is communicating with you than not at all. My DD was on aptimal for 9 weeks but it was around 7 weeks she started to drop her feeds and not take as much. Then she started the whole crying and arching away at feeds. The cow and gate comfort was recommended by Health visitor and friends and I have to say it has made a big difference. DD is now taking full feeds again and is more contented. Still get's colicky some nights (last night bein one ) but has been a vast, vast inprovement, just wish I'd done it sooner. Sorry If I've gone on and if you need to rant with a mum going through it too then I am here
