2 year old cant identify alphabet, colours or numbers

Hi, my two year old can easily sing the alphabet, can count to ten and can point out a right colour when I ask her to. But shr seems to be having problems with actually identifying and what each letter or number actually looks like. And when I ask her what colour something is, she can't say. We do read books and I always point out letters/numbers to her and always try to incorporate colours when I talk to her. Should I be worried about this? Any tips on how to teach 2 year olds please? Thank you xxx

If you are going to start teaching letters you need to follow the sane method as the school she will go to. It's probably Jolly Phonics in which case you need to teacg letter sounds not names.

So for 'S' it's not Ess. You may think it would be Suh but it's actually Ssss.
Likewise Nnn, Mmm etc. You need to find the sounds on YouTube and listen. If you teach her the wrong thing she'll be really confused.

As someone else said - it really depends if your dd has not long turned 2 or is approaching 3.

Bear in mind that the things your talking about (number and letter recognition) are what is expected upon entering school - no more than that.

My 2 dc's have been totally different. Ds, who has just finished first year of reception, knew all his number and letters probably by about 2.5 - he has a brilliant memory... Dd (who is 2.5 now) knows the numbers but has now idea what they look like, and often says them in the wrong order. She can sing the alphabet song but doesn't say all the letters quite right and probably doesn't have any clue what the song actually relates to! She can do some colors...especially "pinky" - her favourite.

Hopefully that comparison will give you an idea of how vast the differences can be at this age OP. Smile

Mine is 3 this week. He can count to 10 (objects and going downstairs) and knows some colours. He's aware that letters and numbers mean something but isn't sure what. So for example- he mights see some alphabet letters and say "Look! Counting: 1..2..3..4"
At 2- I don't remember him knowing anything.
Its a cliche- but they all learn in their own time. You can sink hours and hours trying to get a child to learn something they're not developmentally ready for. Or you can wait a few months and see it click in a few minutes.
I learnt this lesson the hard way buy spending bloody hundreds on baby swimming!
