Speech assessment - what to expect

DD is 3.4 and whilst able to string sentences together, it is very difficult to understand what she is saying at times as the words just aren't clear.
Had a chat with HV today and we are being referred for an assessment in the next 6-8weeks.
Does anybody have any experience of what to expect there? Or the next steps afterwards? Is it one session or several? Thanks in advance.

We had several sessions.

We went to a local centre and DD had toys to play with as well as games to play with the therapist.

I stayed with DD and was also told I talk too fast which is why she was struggling to form her words because she was trying to copy me

Thank you dragons. I was envisioning her being given sentences to say or something - she wouldn't play ball with that at all!

I took my 3.5 yr old to an initial assessment. It was fine-around half an hour. The therapist had a low table of toys and chatted to ds before showing him a number of pictures and asking him what they were. There were quite a few but she kept ds's attention well. Only thing I felt uncomfortable with was when she was asking me about his character with poor ds right there!

Think they decide on next steps after the first appointment.

Thanks Sylvie, sounds like they are pretty standard sessions then. Hoping that it won't need to go any further but she is definitely behind her peers and I feel so awful that sometimes we can't understand her. The other day it took me three attempts to understand a word and she seemed so sad, it broke my heart.

I took ds who is 2.3 yesterday, it lasted about half an hour, she asked me questions about him, I'm assuming some were related to autism. Does he point with his finger etc. ds doesn't say any words at all.

She told me not to ask him questions about what we are doing and to narrate what he is doing all day and repeat everything numerous times.

There was a wooden shapes puzzle on the table, she pointed silently to the correct shape and he shut down putting his face in my lap.

She has said he needs to come back to see someone who specialises in under 3's.
