Toddlers kicking a ball

Just wondered what age your toddler started to kick a small ish ball eg. if you say 'kick the ball' 9 times out of 10 he can kick it, doesn't fall and makes a pretty good job of it.
Just curious....

Hmmm, I think DS2 has been able to do this from about 18 months? DS1 was older, though (not having an older brother to copy probably part of that).

curlew · 11/11/2006 07:12

My ds could do it at 12 months - but he couldn't walk until 17 months! If you held his hands he could kick a ball hard and accurately - it was his party piece "The Amazing Footballing Baby"! He's still football crazy - we spend every Saturday morning freezing our whatsits off on the edge of a windwept field cheering the distand dot that is upur 5 year old son. Take my advice, hide all the footballs like Snow White's parents hid all the spindles......let him kick one once, and it's the slippery slope to frozen feet and the appallingness of Saturday mornings with (some) footballing parents....!!!!!!!
(Some are lovely, but SOME..........!!!!!)

my dd2 is just 15 months..she attempts to kick the ball but usually it trips her up!

lol curlew - love the reply!

How funny. Are other football parents that awful!?

Was just curious as don't want to sound boasting but ds can kick it really well at 16 months and dh is all excited that he is the next David Beckham except hopefully without the aful girly voice! (All this is a bit tongue in cheek so don't take me too seriously we are just messing around and I definitely don't have ambitions for my son to be a pro footballer who marries some silicone enhanced bimbo and snorts his earnings in coke!!)

Get him on the golf clubs next Dh wants ds to be a golfer as you make more ££££ apparently.

boo64 · 11/11/2006 12:54

Being a pro golfer is a bit classier too!

Wouldn't mind if ds became a hairdresser so I could get a good hairdo now and then. Or maybe a personal stylist. Or CEO of a luxury goods company that would give his mum a fab discount on lots of designer kit.

Meant that beckham's voice is awful not aful. But it's that too.

Ds (16 mths ) has been able to kick for about 2 months & has actually dribbled the ball a bit! However recently he has been far more into throwing it which worries me that he may go down the rugby side & I'll have to spend most weekends in A&E!!!!!!!!!

boo64 · 11/11/2006 13:18

hey here's a question - how do you get them to know it's ok to throw a ball but not all their toys etc?!

I've tried telling him but not sure he gets it yet.

Maybe they understand in time?

Ds does golf too. And cricket. And snooker. Anything involving spherical objects. Football parents are generally dreadful - shouting abuse indiscriminantly at their offspring, the coach and the ref. Cricket is better in that it is in the summer and there is plenty of opportunity to lie on a rug and read the papers while "watching" him. Golf so far only happens in our garden, but that's only because he can't read yet, so he doesn't realize that we pass a "pay and play" course twice a day on the school run!

curlewabout the freezing cold satday morning!although mine are freezing cold sunday mornings now

AND my youngest aged 2 is apparently the next ronaldinho according to his big brother

saffy202 · 12/11/2006 22:41

Ds2's first word was kick. He could kick a ball at 10 months - he would hold onto the lamp table and kick the ball - poor thing didn't stand a chance as his football-mad brother was desperate for a playmate
Nowadays we stand on the touchline on Sunday mornings cheering him on then have a quick turn-around and cheer ds1 on. At times it feels our whole life revolves around football - so I agree get out now

brimfull · 12/11/2006 22:49

ds could kick a ball before he could walk aswell. He didn't walk until 13 months. He has a viscious throw aswell!
