Blood in nappy - should I worry?

When I changed DS's nappy this morning, there were some streaks of blood or what looked like blood in it.He's 5 months and bf, with some solids. Do I need to worry and do something?

He isn't constipated and yesterday had carrot and sweet potato to eat. He's had those before and not had the same thing happen. I'd tell DH but he'd probablt say "don't worry" which doesn't really help.

Thank you anyone up on a grey Sunday morning.

Anyone up?.............only since 6am or maybe

Anyway, as for the nappies it maybe undigested food, could it be that? I know when all 3 of mine have been weaned their nappies have had all sorts odd looking poo's in.

Is he unhappy in himself? Feeding ok?

Try phoning NHS direct if you want some reassurance beyond the wealth of MN knowledge.

Got to say that it would worry me and I would phone NHS Direct for advice. Always better to be safe rather than sorry.
I looked in my baby book and the advice said to speak to your GP asap to get it checked out as it might (on rare occasions) be a symptom of internal bleeding. If he hasn?t had any falls, isn?t looking poorly or running a temp. it is prob. nothing but I still don?t think you should take any chances. Much better to "waste a GPs time" and be told that it was sweet potato than to leave a potentially serious condition unchecked. Not tryingt o worry you as it is prob. nothing but still think you should get it checked by someone qualified. Let us know how you get on.

Babies cant digest blood . Are you sure it's not the food? I would phone the gp rather than nhs direct for this.

I'd call NHS Direct too. If you're sure it is blood and not something he ate yesterday. Don't forget it comes out looking silimar to how it goes in in these early stages of weaning!

Benjaminsmummy - certain foods often look like blood in nappies - carrot especially. Keep an eye on the next few. If you are sure it is blood then do speak to the doctor.

would just like to say my ds had this and he was taken to the hospital (though he was actually weeing blood and lots of it) they thought it could be something very serious in him, but it turned out that he must have knocked himself (most likely in the goolies) and burst a vessel.. thus the only way out for the blood was through his wee.

so has baby knocked himself at all???

i would get this checked straigh away... if its quite obvious that it is blood that is? i would take him straight to the hospital not doctors.... i did this with ds and then i thought no i am not waiting a couple of days to see if it dies down, so i went to the hospital...

it could also be food like the others have said?? take a good look inside the nappy... if you have the nose for it!

also i seem to remember that boys can also have a loss of hormones (like little girls often have a period when born) maybe something to do with that? if he is starting to be weaned?

good luck hope its all nothing and just food !! xx

DS1 had this too, just a couple of streaks of blood - I was really really worried and took him straight to the doctor. She examined him and he turned out to have an anal fissure - a little scratch / cut on his anus, probably from straining when he had a poo. Have you had a good look to check for that?
He didn't have it ever again, it was just a one off

Benjaminsmummy · 02/05/2004 20:20

Have been closely watching nappies today (great job to have...) and no return of the streaks of whatever it was, depsite some more poo. After giving DS breakfast, realised the streaks looked very like the reddish parts in his fruit and yoghurt breakfast.....DH also agreed with me once I showed him the saved nappy.

So hopefully I was being paranoid first time mummy but if there is any return of it, I will call NHS Direct.

My 5 month old (BF only) had a couple of mucousy nappies with streaks of blood in them. I rang the Doctor who told me that it was not something that I needed to worry about. I've wished ever since that I'd asked her what it was but did'nt want to waste her time. He's been fine ever since though!
