3.5yr old hair twiddler?

My three year old keeps twirling part of her hair, usually when tired or sad. I've tried a hair clip with fake hair, gently reminding her not to make a tangle. She won't let me me put it up and it's not long enough to plait. What else can I try?

Sock on twiddling hand? Holding her hand gently when she starts?

I wouldn't try cutting her hair shorter - a friend did this and her dd just started pulling out her hair instead...

Why is it a problem? I am 41 31 and still hair twiddle Blush. I've never pulled it out or chewed it, just twiddled (which reads so very wrong).

In my case it's a habit that I'm often not aware of, it's not stress related or anything like that. The only problem it has ever caused me is when I'd try a twiddle my brother's hair in the car and he'd lamp me one Grin

Just to add that we were children when I twiddled my brother's hair - it's not an adult thing!

The tangles it makes are massive and hard to get out, and it's starting to break her hair. I don't want to cut it short as her prime site is in line with the top of her right ear. It would have to be very short and I suspect the girls at preschool would be cruel. I'd like to find a gentle way of diverting her to something else. She has a ton of cuddly toys and a pony with twiddleable hair in bed but I can't make it transfer...

Girls at preschool being cruel? Really??

DD2 did/does this.

  1. We had hair cut just long enough to tie in two side pigtails.
  1. We taught DD2 how to reverse twist to take her knots out. She can untangle her own hair most of the time now she is 4 yo.

Her hair is much thinner on that side but noone teases her about it.

There are some very princess focused confident girls in her preschool. They are 4 and naturally unable to filter their comments and would be unaware that they were being hurtful. My daughter has already had issues with being excluded from playing with them, I feel if she looks different, it could create a situation that is difficult for her.
