I posted a query on the thread below - about 4 or 5 messages in about DD's potty training efforts and her determination to 'hold on' rather than having a wee. Just thought I may get more people notice it but starting this here: The thread the message is on is:

Here!

Thanks to all advice so far on other thread. It's all been fab Just want to make sure everyone with experiences may find my query and post even more advice - the more help I get on mastering this potty training the better

took us a long time (ds still has accidents and his previous nursery not supportive and kept trying to put him back in nappies). He's now 3 and we've been doing it for 4 months. Star chart and rewards helps along with lots of fuss & encouragement for poo in the toilet etc. Probably all said before on previous thread. I did refer to GF's potty training in a week - imposs IMO but still good advice in it.

I have that book too. The fact that she says that some children are regularly using the potty in a couple of hours on second day got me thinking forst. DD doesn't even do one wee (anywhere)in that time scale!!!

I know, not realistic but helps to get them used to sitting on it regularly then they sd use it when ready

Hulababy · 30/04/2004 18:58

Well she will happily sit on potty and has already had lots of success. It is really just the fact that she is trying to hold on too long. Think we need to work on encouraging her to let go of it all before she has any accidents. I can't believe she'll sit happily for ages and still not wee, even though I know she wants to go.

Hi Hula! Loads of good advice here and on the other thread, not much to add. I think the key to breaking the 'holding on' cycle is making it impossible for her to do so ... definitely up the fluids as much as you possibly can - pray for hot weather, as that will really help; makes her want to drink more, and kidneys work faster. Also IME (though don't know why) going swimming really gets the kidneys going as well.

I think the holding on may be a girl thing, at least I've observed it in dds of friends, but not in boys. Obviously the anatomy is different , but is there more muscle control needed for girls?

Just a crazy idea occurred ... can you create an association to help her do this relaxing, or whatever it is ...? when she just starts to wee each time can you sing a specific little song, or press a musical toy or something, and then that association may help her in the early days to find the right muscles.

Running water - as suggested by others - works well for us too.

Btw in GF's defence (and I don't say that often!) both my two boys were doing at least 6 wees an hour on the potty when we first started training! ... Just a different set of problems. (But then GF suggests a child needing to go that often isn't ready to start potty training.)

Hope it goes well for you this weekend.

Thanks roisin. Just posted on other thread (must try and just stick to the one now!) but DD hads just used potty for a week, of own accord and did nice big wee. She, and we, and really pleased for her. She got her reward!

I like your ideas but just about to go out - have a Virgin Vie party at a friends - so will read them in morning. Thanks a lot

Hi all again

She has had a fab day Only one accident and that was when she was completely absorbed in play with grandad, and she was so upset about it. Rest of time she is either going with remonders or, more frequently, of her own accord. She is very proud of herself. My parents are here at the moment and brought her a big girl's present of new ballerina pants set, and some chocolate lollies (she can have one for each night of lots off success - I don't care if I am bad mummy!!! :D )

She is still doing a wee whilst asleep during her nap I think but we will look at that later. And still nothing more than a wee yet - she has been going for that at 6:30am each morning in her nappy - so can't do much about that right now!!! TBH, I think the wee is more important to sort anyway right now.

Really pleased with today's progress. Fingers crossed it'll continue!

Well before bed with had the poo issue to deal with. WE, with my parents, were eating at the table and DD was playing. She went quite, sat and potty and did her bit. Bless her she did really well but when she got up (sorry for gruesome detail here) it was quite solid and had stuck to her. So did not end up in potty but knocked off on to floor as she turned round. BUT in essence she did do it ON the potty so she has been rewarded and praised as if no incident at all. Fingers crossed we are on the up now!

I can't believe I have started to be able to discuss bodily functions so much and is so much detail. I am truely a mum!!!

Yey Hula!! Yey DD!! She's really getting the hang of it, what a STAR!!!!

Hulababy · 01/05/2004 21:54

Cheers WM! She is looking forward to showing your DD her new pants. My mum got her some lovely ones covered in ballerinas which she loves I keep reminding er that your DD wears big girl's pants so naturally she wants to too now

Wahey - well done your dd! Sounds like a really positive day. Hope it continues.

So far today is going well. Been out of the roof top gardens playing; took potty with us. And she used it there no problems, as well as in house. She is now nappy so has Pull Up on over pants (so I can jusge how much and when she might wee in that time). May venture out for a walk later - potty in tow!

Another update. Been out for a walk round town for an hour or so and it was great. Took potty with us (she isn't interested in travel potty yet so going to have to a little normal potty I think). She was fine and no accidents out. We had to call in Boots so DH took her in the baby change area with her potty whilst I shopped, and she had a wee in there. And that was it

Final update

DD seems to have cracked it entirely. had no accidents all week, and this weekend whilst away staying with friends. No accidents since end of 2nd day! Can't believe how well she took to it and it had nothing at all to do with us. She asks to go, she will take herself there sometimes too. We still remind her occasionally as well if busy playing, or we are about to go out or have a nap. Since Tuesday - day 5 - she has had no Pull Ups on for nap either and is always dry

We have even got her to do a poo on the potty too, although that is still more difficult and she isn't keen - but getting there and understands it all. I am hoping she may have overcome that as well now.

So proud of her but she was very obviously ready. I don't think we would have had this much success if she wasn't. It truely as all been down to DD, and not us at all. Yeah
