Tantrums in 18 Month Old

Ok - so I'm sure this is a asked a million times.

My 18 month old DS tantrums 2-3 times a day. I know it's "normal" but I'm not sure how I should deal with it.

I try & distract, ignore etc ... is this the "right" thing to do?

He doesn't walk yet, so an added frustration for him (but he doesn't really try) I do encourage with walker, cruising safely round the sofa etc ....

But yesterday he tantrum'd so bad he whacked his head Confused

Your lucky with just 2-3 a day! I have a lot more.
I try to ignore as well.
The other things I do are;-

  • keep telling lo what's coming next eg it's time for bed soon, time got nappy change etc.
  • praise good behaviour
  • spend proper one on one time with lo every day.
  • after tantrum give a cuddle and kiss
Good luck and I hope there are no more head whacks.

Thank you Grin just nice to know I'm not alone.

A childless friend was VERY quick to judge!! Which prob tipped me over the edge ..... Why do they do that????

Dd is 18months and I am learning how to deal with the tantrums. I stay super calm, she has lost control of her emotions, and needs my help to get it back together. I say things like 'it's all right, mummy is here', 'I can see you are really angry/upset' 'it's going to be ok' and usually she will come to me for cuddles. If it's really bad and she doesn't want me near her, I just give her some space, but still try to reassure her.

It is very frightening for them to be so out of control, they need to see you calm and able to deal with it. They need to learn from you the skills to manage these huge emotions. Losing your cool is the worst thing to do, just be as loving and calm as you can.
