Trying to help a toddler understand that its good to do some things and not so good to do others can be v v hard. Thought it might be nice to start a thread recommending books to read with toddlers that are fun but have a bit of an agenda!

DON'T BE HORRID HENRY
Francesca Simon

This comes out when ds1 has taken one too many swipes at his 9mth old brother.

EAT YOUR DINNER!

BE GENTLE!

GET INTO BED!

All by Virginia Miller and self explanatory! The characters are lovely, especially the little bear called Ba who says "Nah" to everything.

What are your favourites?

I Will Not Never Ever Eat a Tomato

  • and there's another one in same range about going to bed. The little girl in this beautifully illustrated book won't eat lots of different things presented to her by her brother until he tells her they are not peas but green snow from space (or something) and so on.

All Different Bodies
All Different kinds of People
Great books, with flaps, bits to pull, lift, turn, teaching children that we're all made differently. There's one about different religions and the one about people shows that some of us wear glasses, some of us have freckles, some of us have red hair, some have brown, some have white skin, some dark some people get around in wheelchairs, some have false limbs, but it's all nicely illustrated and fun to look through.

I like the Virginia Miller "Ba" books too. There's a potty training one "On Your Potty", and one called "I love you just the way you are"

Go to bed, Doodlehead by Ian Whybrow and Jude Wisdom.

Brilliant pictures and some fantastic catchphrases. Not nearly as well known as it should be.

Going to get that one frogs.

NOT NOW BERNARD
David Mckee

More for us adults who are sometimes too busy. I like it when the monster eats Bernard (the little boy) and leaves just a trainer.

DD and I like the Ba series and When Mum Turned Into a Monster too.
We also like the Bad Tempered Ladybird by Eric Carle, which would be good for learning how to deal with bullies I think, but dd is still a bit young to have that problem.
