What can your 25 month old do?

A friend has commented on the fact that DD can't/won't do 4 piece peg puzzles, can't identify any colours, can't count objects and has no interest in toys whatsoever.

Despite working with children and having an 8yo I can't think for the life of me if this is actually something to worry about or if I should be pushing her more to do these things.

Does your 25 month old do all of these things?

My daughter is 3 in June and has only shown an interest in all of these things over the last few months. She is however, an excellent talker and her vocab has always been advanced for her age (she was a late walker too and never crawled). They're all different! She could count to 10 by 2 but never really applied it to anything, just memorised it. Hope that helps?

My just turned 2yo can do a 12 piece jigsaw (with a bit of help) but only in the last few weeks. He knows some numbers and will attempt to count things "3,4,5,8,10..." and can identify orange, green and red. He doesn't talk much though only puts one or two words together and again this has only happened recently.
The only thing that would concern me maybe is you saying she has no interest in toys, what do you mean by that? Certain kinds of toys or any toys at all? Doesn't she "play" with other objects? If you are concerned can you speak to your HV? You should have a two year check at some point I think.

Passmethecrisps · 18/04/2015 21:53

Your friend should be due a developmental check any time now I think.

DD's was when she was about 27 months. She was given little jigsaws of increasing complexity, fill the space puzzles, string beads and General chat to check comprehension. Other stuff included doing buttons, putting on her own clothes and so on.

I remember thinking that if I had been given the check list a few months before the results would have been very different but by the time she actually got called she had managed most things

Passmethecrisps · 18/04/2015 21:54

^ so it might be that a few more weeks will see all the difference

My DS puts 4/5 word sentences together 'mummy go work on choo choo' and knows pretty much all major colours but wouldn't know a number if it bit him and can't put any clothes on.

Thanks everyone you've all pretty much confirmed what I thought.. She is totally average :o

She does repeat number sequences, when she's walking down the stairs or before she jumps off something she shouldn't "1,2,3 Goooooo"! She can do that up to 6 but never sits and counts items.

She always been more of a run around bashing things child rather than sit and playing with toys right from the start even with her playgym, nothing holds her attention for more than 2-3 minutes so puzzles nomatter how simple are completely redundant. Infact i dont know whether she is capable of doing one because she just doesnt even try. She likes to tinker with things though so putting clothes and shoes on and off with fasteners are great fun apparently.

By 25 months DS was doing 12 piece puzzles by himself and 24 piece ones with minimal help, but he LOVED puzzles. He also knew his colours and shapes, and could count to 10 (sometimes), although he wasn't able to count objects beyond 3.

But he certainly couldn't put clothes/shoes on and off by himself, still can't at 31 months. Well, maybe he can pull his socks off and work a zip. And he can get his nappy off too, unfortunately.

But as for whether any of this is actually anything to worry about? Nah, there is such a huge range of 'normal' and kids can change from novice/know nothing to expert at something in a matter of weeks.

Ineedacleaningfairy · 19/04/2015 12:11

My ds knew his colours really quite early, he'd point out blue at around 15 months and by 2 he knew all his colours but that was just his thing. He would count things in 3s, so say there were 20 cars he'd count them 1,2,3-1,2,3-1,2,3... He could count 1-10 but not actually count 10 objects. He'd do jigsaws but I'd have to sit with him and keep him interested otherwise he'd just try to sit in the box of throw the pieces about pretending they were rain Hmm

LargeGlassofWhite · 19/04/2015 17:56

My DD is 32 months old, so a good few months older, she can count to 20 but there's usually mistakes. She would be able to count the number of objects with help, maybe about 3 things if doing it alone. She knows the main shapes and colours, speaks fluently (similar to a 3-4 year old). She can do simple puzzles/jigsaws. She knows a few phonics (only just started discussing them tho), she will pretend to read and sound out words (copies my 5 year old), she knows a million nursery rhymes and all the actions. She's recently started to draw pictures, just simple things like a smilie face.
But I'd say most of these things she didn't do at 25 months, she probably knew a few shapes and colours and that's it.

I don't do anything spectacular with her, she's learnt most things from listening to DS and playing with me/DH/DS.
They're like little sponges at this age, one day they can't do something, the next day they did. I don't think you need to 'push' her, she'll naturally pick things up through play.
Also my DS still isn't interested in toys much and he is extremely bright, I don't think it's a sign of development, just that they're all different. DS just prefers playing with people than a toy.

I do think your friend was being a bit of a cow to say she thinks your daughter is underdeveloped. Does she have a child the same age to compare against? It is really hard to remember exactly what they were doing at each age.

LetThereBeCupcakes · 20/04/2015 11:43

My DS is 25 months exactly.

He can do peg puzzles very quickly, and does bits of large floor puzzles (e.g. will put together Fiona in his Shrek puzzle, which is about 6 pieces, but then loses interest.). Puzzles are his "thing" though.

Counts 1, 2, 3, then random numbers until finishing up with "TEN YAY!"

Knows his colours because my Mum taught him because her friend's grandson knew his.

Sort of interested in toys, but doesn't stick with anythin for long.
