DS is 2 and a half. I very rarely take him to school without a pushchair as he wanders off. It is getting to the point where he doesn't really need the pushchair but I still use it for safety.

We have tried reins and he just sits down and wont walk.

We have tried a wrist strap but he takes it off.

I have tried explaining to him how dangerous it is and how sad I am when he does it and I have even cried infront of him.

Today at school, I lost him for about 10 minutes. I had half the school looking for him. A teacher found him in the end hiding behind a corner in the playground not far from where he dissapeared from.

At the moment I am thinking that he is never getting out of the pushchair again but I realise this is not a practical solution forever. Does anyone have any other ideas that may help. Thankyou.

Oh dear, I've no suggestions other than keep on with the reigns. Insist on it, and maybe put them on in the house and let him run round wearing the harness bit to get used to it.

I would use the pushchair. He will get the message eventually. Use today as a wake up call and when he complains remind him of how scared and worried you were when you couldn't find him.

Take the pushchair.

I thought this was the only real option but you never know, somebody may have a brain wave.

What about the rucksack which has parent reins` attached? He can carry his special things but you can keep him close and safe.

That is a fantastic idea, thankyou. He loves backpacks.
