My nearly 3 year old goes to a preschool playgroup and has just in the last few days started to itch his head. I thought it might have been cos I changed from Johnsons Shampoo to Baby Simple range so I washed it in Johnsons 2 nights ago but still seems to be itching. Had a look at his head and cant see any nits?

Have you got a nit comb you could comb through his hair just to check?

hayleyhew · 02/11/2006 15:56

no havent got one - would I be able to get one from the chemists and nit shampoo? Can you easily see nits with comb?

Buy cheap conditioner and a nit comb and wet comb through his hair.

you can't spot them easily unless he has hundreds and has therefore had them for ages.
Typical cases are about 10 lice - they run superfast, very hard to spot.

You need to wet comb thoroughly to screen your child ...here is a good product to use

back of ears and nape of neck good places to check - but they can be all over. DD has nearly waist length hair and I am in the process of eradicating them from her - Hedrin simple to use if you do find any, and I am wetcoming too. Thought I was clear, but had to treat myself and DH last night, so annoying!

Nitty Gritty combs are great because they comb out the eggs as well as the lice. They cost about £10 but well worth it.

second Nitty Gritty combs - best I have found (we have only been infested 3 times - and once was me after teaching practice! - but after this week I feel like an expert in bug busting!)

hayleyhew · 02/11/2006 19:07

thanks all - just come back from chemist and used nit comb and put some stuff on him you leave overnight - found 3 with comb. They didnt sell nitty gritty comb but I am going to get one.

Try coconut oil.

Nitty gritty combs are available free on prescription! I went to dr about dds nits as i could not get rid of them using normal comb or any nit lotions and was completely desperate and he recommended the nitty gritty comb and gave me the prescription for it! Does work really well but takes ages, I spent 40 mins combing dds hair tonight!

I've said this before - and it works...I don't like using chemicals, or anything that you couldn't use every day if you had to.

I use baby oil. smother on dry hair, then put a shower cap or cling film on head (secured with clips). wash out a couple of hours later, put shampoo on dry hair firdt, rinse, then shampoo again. then conditiuon, and comb through and final rinse. They fall out dead or at least not moving. Babay oil is better than anything that contains a chemical imo!

chelltune · 03/11/2006 20:45

I agree berrycherry, thats why I use the coconut oil.

southeastastra · 03/11/2006 20:50

hedrin is just pure oil but about ten times more expensive, when i used it on my son i wondered if any oil would do the same..
