Moving from a cot to a bed

Just wondered what the rough age is to do this?

We have a cot bed which I would assume makes the transition a bit easier?

Also what's the thoughts on a duvet versus a sleepbag?

My son was 21 months and we're moving my daughter when she's 20 months (to allow them to adjust before starting nursery). It was fine but we needed to spend longer reading stories to get them nice and drowsy, leave a large cushion on the floor and we used a duvet, not bags, so they could get up if they rolled.

We did it age 2 for dd1 as she was out of nappies at night. No plans yet for dd2 who is just over 18mo.

Many leave them in until 3ish so no rush.

I'd suggest a bag is a no-no - it would have to be a duvet or blankets etc

DD is 17 months so of course no rush. Just wondered.

Might b worth her getting used to a duvet now though for when we do make it into a bed?

She goes to nursery half the week and has just started having naps on a mattress on the floor

DD was 2.8 when we moved her from a cotbed to a real bed. She'd mostly slept in sleep bags as she is the most awful wriggler & ended up at the top of the cot every night, we found the bags reduced this. They also made it easier to pull her back down to the middle of the cot without waking her. Obviously you need to lift their head slightly, & make sure their arms are not caught between the bars before you do this!

Now she's in a real bed, she is improving at wriggling less, and despite having no bed guard, she has only fallen out 3 times in 3 months (really surprised actually). She has a duvet as she gets out of bed to come in with us sometimes - we co-slept in the early months & she still finds it comforting. Sometimes it's easier to let her, than have an early morning battle to get her back to her own bed.

Part of the reason we usef sleep bags, was that we found DD would wriggle out from under the blanket, get cold, and wake up. But, if you are planning to start the transition in summer, this seems less of an issue (especially if your DC is less wriigly than ours) so introducing a duvet now could be a good plan.

Sorry about typos - wine and one handed typing...

We took her out of sleeping bags and gave her a duvet at 22 months in the cot. Took the sides off a few weeks ago at 2.4 and have just bought her a full sized single bed this week. Working for us so far, no rush unless you need the cot for another baby.

We waited til 2.5 which seems very late compared to most. It just worked for DS. He loved his cot & sleeping bag but changed with no probs to a bed & duvet

Kreggle · 06/04/2015 07:27

Dd has just turned 2 and I'm in no rush to put her into a bed. She's still in sleeping bags as well.

She doesn't try and clamber out of the cot which is why she's still in it, I'd rather her not be able to get out of bed just yet!

Alyx80 · 06/04/2015 15:59

My son is 3y2m and still in a cot! His brothers were 23m (climbed out so no choice) and 2y10m when they moved to a bed.
Have left DS3 so long as we've just had another baby and didn't want the disruption lol.

Have a just turned 2 year old. Still in cot as he moves around loads but started with a duvet a few months back

rallytog1 · 07/04/2015 13:54

My nearly 2yo has slept in a bed a couple of times but we're keeping her in the cot for as long as possible. I don't want to deal with all that getting up and out until we have to, and she so far doesn't seem to have twigged that she could probably climb out of the cot if she wanted to Grin

Lovelydiscusfish · 07/04/2015 18:01

Mine moved at just under three! She is quite little, so was fine in the cot really, and still in nappies at night so no need to get up for the loo. But she got quite into the idea of having a bed, cots being for babies etc, so it was quite a nice treat for her - in fact she feels the bed is a present!
Transition went very smoothly, except for the first night when she claims to have fallen out and dh found her on the floor trying to tuck herself up with her rug! But she demonstrated and narrated this to me the next day with quite an amused glint in her eye, so I think it was a bit of a con to try and get into our bed!

ALittleFaith · 07/04/2015 23:12

We did it at 23 months with DD. She screamed every time she went in the sleeping bag and cot. Much better in the bed (we went straight to a bed) although we also dropped the day time nap (sob) a couple of weeks after to make bed time easier.
