Could my LO be colour blind?

DS has just turned 2 and though he knows the names of all the colours, he doesn't seem to be able to identify or differentiate correctly between the colours.

Just to give context, he knows his number 1-20, knows the alphabet and can recognise letters, can identify tonnes of objects by name etc.

Is this something at this stage I should worry about?

No. DS1 called every colour 'blue' for ages when he was just two. By the time he was 2.5, he could name all colours brilliantly. Give it a bit more time yet Smile

Picking up words is one thing. Gaining concepts is another. You gain a concept through experience. its the same with numbers. Counting is one thing but understanding the concept of a number is another eg being able to sort out three objects etc. Sharing stories, playing little games, singing songs, nursery rhymes etc. going out and about are what two year olds need. So relax and don't worry.

I remember worrying about the same thing when my DS was about that age. His grandfather is colourblind, so it was on my mind, and he did seem to mix up his colours for a long time. He is 7 now, and no signs of any problems.

A check for colourblindness is included when you take him for his first eye test.

It's not something to worry about, nor is it something you can do anything abiut either.

It's not anything to worry about, even if he is colour blind. Besides a handful of jobs that he would be excluded from, it would hardly affect his future. And as pp says, it's not something you can do anything about anyway.

If you are just curious (especially if it runs in your family), you could try an Ishihara test with him, as you say he knows his numbers. For example at colorvisiontesting.com/ishihara.htm

I worried about this with ds at the same age. Dotty Dinosaurs is a great game for helping to get them to understand the concept of colours. It's really nothing to worry about at that age. Ds knows all his colours now as well as tones and shades. He's 4 but struggled to acquire colours at first - bizarrely it was the primary colours that caused him the problems.

DS1 knew all his colours from early on, he had many eye tests and we never had a cause for concern. He went to do the tests to join the army last year at 19 and only just scraped in because he has quite severe colour blindness.

I wouldn't be worrying at just 2.

Thanks everyone, will stop worrying Smile
