my 3 year old nephew has very little speech, but he does seem really inteligent. his vocab is mum, nan and yer and thats it the rest of the time it's uh. he has a lot of siliver comming out of his mouth he went to a speech specilist a couple of days ago who has said he could have miares( sorry haven't got a clue how you spell it, it maybe mia's) has anyone any idea what this is, and if it means he will never speak, it's just the speech person did mention him having to go to a special school and learn to sign. my sister in law was a bit in shock so didn't think to ask loads of questions about what mia's is, can anyone give advice on this subject. many thanks

perfumelady, I'm so shocked that your sis came out of the appointment so worried but so unclear about what it is, or even the name or how to spell it! The therapist really should have been clearer about things, I really feel for her!

I would definitely phone the speech therapy dept or get your sister to if she feels up to it; you deserve a much fuller explanation of things if it really means that your nephew may be going to special school. Make them explain it to you - at least a basic understanding of what it is he may have!

I am cross on your behalf!

Perfume,I am a speech and language therapist and it sounds as if things weren't explained very well at all.
Your sister needs to go back to her Health Visitor (has she a good one??) and tell her that she has no idea what the issue is.
If necessary, the HV could see her with the speech and language therapist.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'miares' at all.
Please get her to demand more help. Can you go with her too???

thanks, it was the speech and language specilist that they went to see, they said he had no sounds coming out at all, i'm guessing that my sister in law got the name wrong(mia's, miras) my nephew hardley eats anything, and as i said is very dribbly. he is due to have a hearing test, although we'd all be surprised if he is def as he appears to know exactly what your saying. He also uses his own kind of sign language to let you know what he wants and appears bright for his age. i think like you said she needs to speak to someone again so it can be explained properly to her, my nephew has another appointment in a few weeks where he will be assesed again and given an actual dianosis.thanks for taking time to answer my post
