What age can kids make tea or coffee on their own?

I mean, on average :) I know it'll vary a bit between individuals. Looking forward to the day I don't have to brew my own tea anymore :P

Eight for me. Doubtless someone else will come on and tell how their four year old makes them a full English every morning, though.

Pippidoeswhatshewants · 23/03/2015 19:55

Whenever they want to start drinking tea or coffee?

tomandizzymum · 23/03/2015 19:58

8 ish. If you like it sweet.

BiscuitMillionaire · 23/03/2015 19:58

age 9 here

AnnoyedByAlfieBear · 23/03/2015 20:02

I've started training 2.7 yr old ds. Grin

PunkrockerGirl · 23/03/2015 20:12

There was a thread recently where the OP was surprised that a visiting (older) child had requested coffee to drink. From the horrified reaction of other posters, you'd think he'd asked for a vodka and red bull and a fag Confused

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 23/03/2015 20:15

I jokingly asked my 6 year old just before mothers day. she said she was too small she might burn herself but did offer to wash up Grin

I think probably once they can reach without standing on something and more importantly if they offer to make it for you or want it themselves.

EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 23/03/2015 20:51

I think the right age is when some other responsible adult will allow it. For me that was when DD was in Brownies, age 7-8 for a badge iirc.

lostintoys · 23/03/2015 21:13

8-year-old DS loves making me a cup of tea (my mother taught him).

Jackieharris · 23/03/2015 21:15

I think DS was 8 when I started bribing him to make tea

Paintedpinksapphires · 23/03/2015 21:19

I think I was 8yo, I certainly learned for a Brownie badge. My DC are coming up for that age and I don't think we are quite there yet. One would be ok to have unsupervised access to boiling water, the other not so much.

BossWitch · 23/03/2015 21:19

When I joined the Brownies (many years ago!) everyone's first badge was "hostess" which involved making a proper brew - in a pot! - at the age of seven. So seven seems ok to me.

WaitingForMe · 23/03/2015 21:30

DS (2) insists on stirring mine when I put the milk in. I'm fully anticipating him cooking a full English by the time he's four Wink

BlueChampagne · 24/03/2015 12:26

BossWitch I'd forgotten all about that badge! DS1 is 7.7 - guess what he's going to learn come the weekend!

Eva50 · 24/03/2015 12:33

I made tea from age 7 or 8 but I wouldn't let ds3 (8). About 10 I think as he will be able to reach the kettle.

dotty2 · 24/03/2015 12:38

DD1 is 9 and has learnt to make tea in the last year (wouldn't trust DD2 who's 7, though I'm sure some 7 year olds would be capable of it). She is so pleased with her new found skill she made me and DH one on Christmas morning to wake us up with.

momb · 24/03/2015 12:45

I happily teach Brownies to do it from aged 7 with support but at home the kettle is heavei9er/higher so my tiny YD(10) is only just starting now, and only because we've bought one of those one-cup kettles that you put the mug under and press a button.
She makes a lovely omelette though.

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 24/03/2015 12:46

7 with oversight, 8 on their own

SunnyBaudelaire · 24/03/2015 12:48

about 21 judging by some parents' attitudes.
But really about 8.

Titsalinabumsquash · 24/03/2015 12:50

I have an 8 and a 10 year old, I have dabbled with teaching then but I often find it's quicker and easier to do it myself.

I always wait in anticipation on these sorts of threads for someone to come along to say their toddler cooks a three course, family meal once a week from scratch with no help. GrinWink

AdoraBell · 24/03/2015 12:52

I'd say 8/9 but then they reach 13 and lose the abilityConfused

Solareclipseoftheheart · 24/03/2015 12:54

My son age 6 loves being allowed to press the button to make a nespresso (under supervision). I can't see him being ready to properly make a cup of tea or coffee though for a few years

Mutley77 · 24/03/2015 12:59

My DD did it first when she was just over 8. She rarely does it though !!!

Now she is 10 and has learned how to use the coffee machine properly - froth milk etc - and can also make cupcakes on her own, do her own breakfast/snacks, make her own packed lunch, cook a simple pasta dish, make pancakes (for that I do supervise the actual cooking bit). I guess I need to move on to cleaning tasks. It is soooooooooooooo lovely to get the help with cooking :)

BeansInBoots · 24/03/2015 13:00

Dd is 2.3 and does the sugar, tea bag, milk and stirring for me.. She makes a good cuppa!

A long way off for doing the water though..

LowryFan · 24/03/2015 13:00

10 here. Based on height of work surface and height of child. 8 year old does prepare a lovely cup of coffee but I do the final pouring boiling water bit.
