relationship between R / L handedness and birthweight study

The university of Southampton have just finished a study into handedness and concluded that birth weight is a major factor in determining it. In a study of 212 children they found 20% of low birth weight were left handed compared to 6% of normal to high BW
So for my unscientific study add you DD / DS birth weight and handedness

That's interesting about the scans.

While expecting DD I had lots of scans - problems with blood tests showing a high risk of Down's Syndrome, then an amnio followed by regular scans as the amnio suggested a genetic problem which meant problems with the size of head / brain. (It was a false result though as they suspected that they'd messed up the amnio).

Probably had about 12 altogether.

DS - only had 3.

DD1 (now 6) 4lb 12oz RH
DD2 (now 4) 7lb 8oz RH for writing, but quite ambidextrous (e.g. invariably uses left for eating)

dd1 6lb 13oz - RH
dd2 8lb - RH
ds 8lb - RH I think but not sure yet

What do they define as low birthweight?

Me - RH
DP - LH

DSS(12 years)- 9lb 90zs - LH - mother RH
DS (2.4) - 6lb 1oz - LH

DS was lefty right from word go even though i know they say its not till 4/5 that you know for sure.

Really think its more to do with genetics than birthweight IMO

From my experience its genetic in our family,lets hope we have many champion tennis players
Left handers here are:Father,sister in law,nephew,two neices,daughter and i am abit of both(hold mouse in left hand and write with right)

it's probably because children with a low birthweight are more likely to be premature which means they are more likely to have neurological difficulties. People with neurological difficulties are often ambilateral or cross lateral (i.e. left handed and right footed).

ds1 8lbs, 9 oz - lh and rh - equally crap with both in terms of fine motor skills. Has been 'made' to choose rh.

Interesting my sister was prem about 2 lbs and she is left handed....

Don't know with my boys yet as they're not old enough to have a dominant hand, but...

me: 6lb 13oz - RH, but LH for loads of things.

Like what hunker? Whisking? Sawing? Nosepicking?

Opening bottles, using can openers, dealing cards - and lots of other things - just general "if my left hand's nearest, I use it" stuff.

Definatly a genetic link there.

Left-handed whistling. Now there's a challenge.

dd1 6lb 1/2 oz - ambidextrous - still hasn't come clear although tends to left handedness

dd2 9lb 7oz - clearly left handed already.

My bro was the biggest - writes left handed does everything else right handed.

me - lowest weight - very right handed.

think in our case - from dh's mum who is also very LH but writes right handed.... think it was from the days when teachers made children use their right hand to write.
