11mo not crawling or bum shuffling

I've posted twice about this before and been reassured by good old MNers that everything is probably fine, but I continue to worry about my DS's lack of mobility. He's one week shy of 11 months.

He's been happily sitting unaided since about 6 months and I'm in no way worried about his general development otherwise. In fact (probably unsurprisingly) his fine motor skills seem to be a bit advanced (he can take the lid off a biro e.g.!) and I think he's just saying his first word properly (Nana ha!!).

But... he does not crawl, bum shuffle, pull himself up or anything. If he sees something he wants that he can't reach he points and shouts. Occasionally he will fall flat on his face trying to reach it.

I know all babies develop differently but I also don't want to miss something that's actually wrong. When should I seek further advice? 12 months?

TIA x

I have a 10 month old who isnt crawling or pulling up. I mentioned to the doctor the other day (there for something else) that I was worried about it and thought he might have hypermobility. She told me to bring him in another day when he wasn't sick so she could examine him properly.

So if you are worried go get him checked
I felt a bit daft worrying I know that crawling ismt something all babies do but the doctor was lovely about it.

But just to add it can think of three or four babies in know who weren't crawling at age one And no problem with any of them now.
But that isn't stopping me worrying about my son.

Not an expert but have 4 kids and if I remember rightly sitting by 6 months suggests good muscle control.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 19/03/2015 22:30

If you stand him up, will he do it comfortably? With support obviously Smile

If it's any help, my DS didnt crawl or bum shuffle or even pull himself up at this age but could stand and okay with things on the sofa if we stood him there.

I had concerns about dd. Round here they weren't concerned till beyond 18 months. Then we got our physio referral

ShootPeppaPig · 19/03/2015 22:34

I'd start getting it checked by this age but it could be something as simple as not having any need to - for instance you may be able to encourage it by putting things he likes "just" out of his reach, or implementing more tummy time, or even demonstrating crawling yourself as he may just be expecting to go straight to walking if he doesn't see others crawl/shuffle. I would encourage crawling over shuffling if you can as I think it's been linked to assisting brain development - but then there are also plenty of healthy kids who do just go straight to walking, or walk before they then learn to crawl!

DS sat securely by 6 mths but didn't move from the spot he was put in before he was 1 (no crawling, shuffling, rolling) He loved to walk holding onto our fingers (as long as we lifted him to the standing position!) And he walked unaided just after his 1st birthday but took a few more months to be able to get himself to the standing position by himself. Eventually crawled at 16mths. Stil not the most physical child in the world but completely fine otherwise.

Exactly the same experience as Nelly

Mandzi34 · 20/03/2015 21:31

My son was the same, if not even less advanced. He wasn't doing anything more than sitting (started doing that at 9 months) when the HV saw him at 13 months. He was referred to a physio even though we protested. He is my third and totally reliant on the other two for everything. My then 6 year old used to sit behind him so that he was cushioned in her arms when playing! We always knew he was just lazy as his fine motor skills were fine.

He eventually walked when he decided to do so at about 21 months. He is now almost 3 and just the same as any other child his age. He is more cautious about climbing and heights in general, but that's no bad thing.

Gurraun · 22/03/2015 14:42

I could have written this! My ds sat up around 6/7 months, good fine motor skills. Started to bum shuffle at 12 months, crawled around 15 months (but preferred to bum shuffle). Walked at 18.5 months and at 20 months i can't catch the little bugger! Easier said than done, but don't stress, he'll be fine.

BarbarianMum · 22/03/2015 15:16

Can he weight-bear (if you hold him in the standing position can he brace his legs and support his own weight for a short time)? If he can, I wouldn't worry at all. If he totally refuses (curls legs up etc) I'd take him to the GP to get his hips checked.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 22/03/2015 20:52

Think the OP may have disappeared...Hmm

fionnthedog · 23/03/2015 14:11

Hey sorry not disappeared!! Took a while to get back to MN, but thanks so so so much for your replies. It always means so much.

He does weight bear sometimes but not always and not for any length of time. I'm seeing HV on unrelated issue next week so might mention it tho scared she'll scare me.

I dont think crawling, bumshuffling or cruising are developmental milestones as some kids don't do them. I think the big ones are sitting by 8 months and walking (cant remember, maybe 18 months). dd sat at 8 months, didnt move until she was 15 months. she started bumshuffling days after she started nursery (she had her parents wrapped around her little finger, bringing her toys). 1st steps unaided by 21 months and her walking developed v quickly. Get paediatrician referral from ur gp if u r worried, tho
