Am asking in re my grandchild who is here with us this evening and was in great form until she got her bottle of lactose free formula. She's always very windy, crying and unsettled after her bottle and she stiffens up and draws her legs up and kicks. So I think the l-f formula doesn't agree with her.
But, I don't see her mum very often - baby is my son's child - and when I do, she's a nervous first time mum so I don't like to add to her stresses.
Having reared 2 hungry babies of my own I know something is not right and I hate to see the baby suffering. Has anyone any experience of this, or any advice to offer?

What milk is she on?

Ds is on nutramigen which still has the milk protein in but it's just so broken down the body doesn't react, however I was told he could still have a reaction to the broken down protein in which case he would have to switch to a lactose free one like neocate (I think!). I have also been told these formulas are a lot thinner than normal milk and can therefore cause reflux, so if there is no other symptoms of cmpi it may be that (mucus poos, feeding constantly, unsettled, rash etc) but I'm not a dr so only speaking from experience!

Your grandchild should be under a consultant, it may be worth getting dil to discuss the symptoms with the gp/consultant as they can prescribe stuff for reflux, or would be able to suggest a more suitable formula Smile

And also, it took about 2 weeks for ds to get all the cmp fully out his system, he was still unsettled for a few weeks after starting his new milk.

Lactose free or CMP (cows milk protein) free?
And who has moved her onto a different milk?
CMP is more common to be sensitive to than lactose.

Thanks so much for replies. Baby is my ds's and he's not married to the mum or even living with her, and I barely know her - so I'm trying to tread carefully as you can imagine! I don't want to alienate her by sticking my nose in, or start telling her what to do (though I can't believe that her own dm hasn't expressed any concerns).

But I can't sit here and watch baby obviously in pain, so I'm trying to find out as much as I can so that I can have a conversation with mum at the weekend and hopefully pass on your advice; Baby is on SMA lactose free formula on the advice of the gp following severe nappy rash, so bad she was bleeding, at about 2 weeks of age. Now her bum is fine but ...
