Night waking 6 months

How do I stop this? What are my options?
He's waking usually once in the middle of the night. I breastfeed, he goes back no issues.

What have you done that's worked?

I can't answer your question sorry, but i just wanted to say that only 1 waking per night sounds really good to me. My DD is 6mo and wakes at least 4 times a night. I'd love to know how to help her sleep longer!

Nothing. It's normal (or dare I say it quite good) to wake once in the night for a feed at six months. Probably too small for sleep training and could you be really confident that your baby isn't just hungry??

solstice930 · 28/02/2015 15:08

That's definitely normal at 6 months. Once he starts weaning and eating consistently, he may drop the last night feed on his own. My dd did around 7 or 8 months.

From someone whose 10 month old still wakes 4 - 5 times a night, not for a feed, I'm jealous! It is normal to still need one feed at that age.

Everyotherusernameistaken · 28/02/2015 16:16

Ah, I know I know it could be worse, sorry if I've made you feel bad!

On two meals a day at the min, so no I'm not 100 percent sure it's not hunger.
Thanks for your responses

OP I think it's totally reasonable to expect you 6 mo old not to wake for milk. My son was under a top paediatrician re feeding and he said that providing the baby was 12lbs and was getting all calories in the day that he should sleep through. He said we have a real culture of habitual wakers in our society because 1. We feed our babies immediately after waking to resettle them quicker and we can get back to bed and 2. Through higher levels of social networking etc we find more similar people still feeding in the night, which justifies our choice.

I'm not saying stop feeding him, if you have any doubt that he is deny hungry then please do. If not, I was advised to start watering down feeds to the point it was just water, my son stopped habitually waking and his eating in the day improved vastly.

Just wanted to share my experience. Hope that helps x

Copper your pead is talking utter bollocks and i would love to see the evidence for his advice. One big lesson I've learnt over the years as a HCP is lots of professionals dont bother to up date their knowledge. The whole sleeping through at 12lbs is outdated and not research based.

It's completely normal for a six month old to wake at night. Once a night is really good going as this age. www.isisonline.org.uk has research on infant sleep, normal patterns and development.

My dd started sleeping through at about 7 months quite a bit then very frequently about 8 months. I did do some sleep training about 6 months as she had regressed from waking once to several times.

Superworm- NICE, also back up his suggestion and support it by the fact that this is why weaning starts at this age. Mostly the people who disregard the suggestion are probably those who have children who still feed at night, if the individual is happy with that then that is fantastic and good for them. Given the OP is not happy with the situation, I think it's fair for her to seek a way out by encouraging longer sleep in her baby- I can personally see why she is tired with it.

My son starting sleeping through at 12 weeks with a dream feed. He would feed at around 7, go up to bed between 7.30 and 8, I would then feed him when I went to bed at 10.30 and change his nappy (alot of the time he stayed pretty asleep during this!) He would then sleep through til around 7. We tried to cut out the dream feed at around 6 months which resulted in a night waking, so spent a month gradually cutting down the dream feed then tried stopping again at 7 months, and he has slept through since. He is now 18 months, and sleeps from 7.30 until anytime between 7.30 and 9.30 :) I'm pregnant with my second child and will definately be dream feeding this one aswell!
