Everything I've heard and read suggests 4-6 weeks. My newborn has DEFINITELY been smiling since 2.5 weeks.
All u mummies?

Same as with any developmental milestone. Average is 6 weeks. Some will smile earlier, some later. My first smiled at 2 weeks, second was similar but can't remember exactly.

All 3 of mine smiled about 8 weeks. Quite infrequently at first then more often.

Bicnod · 21/02/2015 17:28

All three of mine were around 3 weeks when they started doing proper big sparkly eyed smiles Smile

Maybe partly depends how enthusiastically and entertainingly YOU smile at THEM.

And is there any gender difference, I wonder?

Allegrogirl · 22/02/2015 21:25

First at 6 weeks (had reflux and was pretty miserable most of the time) second was 4 weeks and a very cheerful baby (as long as fed and held all the time).

About average really.

Ds1 was 3 weeks. Ds2 smiled art the midwife at 10 days old. Even she remarked it was a definite smile and not wind.

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 22/02/2015 21:42

DD started smiling at 4 weeks. She's now 15 months and has not stopped smiling since then; she's known as 'little miss sunshine' amongst our NCT group.

Fumnudge · 22/02/2015 21:48

2 weeks for both of mine (girls).
I didn't believe it (because you're told it's not) til the midwife confirmed it was perfectly possible.

hippo123 · 22/02/2015 22:29

9 weeks for dd. my ds was earlier, about 6 weeks I think.

HungryDam · 28/02/2015 14:05

DS smiled on the 1st day. And no it wasn't wind.

NoMontagues · 28/02/2015 14:09

DD smiled at 6 weeks. DS smiled from day one, but not a social smile. He would smile (and later giggle) just at the point of dropping off to sleep, and he'd also smile when doing a wee Grin Blush Then he started smiling socially at 5 weeks.

SanityClause · 28/02/2015 14:12

DD2 smiled at the midwife, so before 10 days, which is when they are (were, anyway) handed over to the health visitor.

I absolutely concur with those who say it wasn't wind. You can tell the difference between a happy smile and wind - it's your fanjo that gets a bit damaged by childbirth, not your eyes!

I said on another thread recently, but it bears repeating - the wind thing is just a put down for new mothers. Mustn't let them think they might know anything about their own baby!

Haha pp, made me smile. Ur right though
