How can I teach 10yo to blow nose?

Have tried lots of things over the years, eg blowing bubbles in bath/pool with nose (she can't), ping pong ball blowing races, breath in then out explanations etc. She just can't do it, which means lots of irritating sniffing if she has a cold. I now worry that it will annoy her friends too! She is a very bright girl with no other physical issues. Any ideas?

no idea, but neither of mine can blow their noses, so will watch with interest.

Im 36 and have never been able to do it, so I would be keen to see if I can pick anything up from here. I can blow out through my nose but theres something that stops me being able to properly have a good nose blow!

i think part of the technique is not just blowing through your nose, but bringing you tongue up to your upper palette at the same time to create a bit of a vacuum, if that makes sense.

My DS 14 can't do it but he seems to recover quicker than those that can. I'm not sure blowing actually helps.

Get her to try and blow a candle (a birthday candle!) with the air coming out her nose. It's very funny, and it does help!

This is going to sound really horrible, but it can really help to use a recorder!

Get your dd to place the recorder in front of her nostrils, and make the recorder make a sound. Start very gently though!

I also agree with Beryl about the tongue on the palette behind the teeth. The same as when you make a "l" sound.

If you combine the two things above, your dd should be able to start isolating the muscles and technique required to blow her nose.
