Small for age children and newborn car seats

I was just wondering from other people who have had children small for their age how long did their child stay in the newborn car seat for? I think my child will be in it til she's over 2!

Go by weight not age, they recommend rear facing until 2 years of age anyway (ideally). Scandanavia stay rear facing until 4 years or 16Kg ish, as long as your little one is comfy and happy leave her as long as you can.

I know I just wondered if anyone else had this and if anyone else has left their little in this seat for so long

My ds is light and skinny but average height. We had problems at about 16-18mo as he was too light for the ff but too tall for the rf. basically I had to move him the minute he hit 9kg (lower limit for bigger seat) as his head was above the back of the smaller seat :(

Haribolover · 20/02/2015 17:53

DD is on 2nd centile and based on growth charts would have stayed in it weight wise until 2. However I think she might have been too tall. However she was trying to see out and looked a bit cramped so we've moved her to a extended rear facing Besafe.

purpleme12 · 20/02/2015 17:53

Oh no that sounds a worry!

Mine is small for her age in height and weight really

A friend of mine had very small children and they were in their newborn seat until at least 18 months, maybe later. It's the weight that's important, not the age. I think the only problem with my DD would be that she likes to sit upright, she gets really frustrated if I put her in her newborn seat now (she's 15 months).

youjusthaventearnedityetbaby · 20/02/2015 17:56

She's fine until her head reaches the top of the seat. Doesn't matter about legs... You could look at seats that rearward face from a young age... Maxi cosi Axissfix or 2 way pearl?

Isisizzie · 20/02/2015 17:58

I kept my dd in her infant carrier until 16 months. She was 24lbs and quite long. She could have lasted another month or so in it but I was back at work and my mum was not confident with strapping her in her car properly.
I would have kept her rear facing for longer but I couldn't afford another Britax dualfix for her for only once a week 5 minute journey.

Sirzy · 20/02/2015 17:59

DS was over 18 months when he outgrew his infant carrier so he stayed in it until he did.

purpleme12 · 20/02/2015 18:10

She's 16 months and she's still got a long way to go!

Yes I think she does get a bit annoyed because she tries to sit up sometimes. I mean it's not like she's unhappy in the car yet but at the rate she's going she might not be out of it til over 2!

Can you sit up in them then? Bit confused surely she'd still be safer in this one cos she's nowhere near max weight and height?

To be honest though I'm not sure we can afford one of those rearward ones they're more expensive aren't they

My son was in his newborn seat until well after he was 2. He was very small, both weight and height (still is).

What's a HBB?

My son's coming up to 16 months, is just over average weight for his age and is still in his infant carrier. His legs stick out a bit, but his head doesn't. He doesn't spend much time in the car though.

NorahBone · 23/02/2015 10:20

Oh HBB is a high backed booster?

cheapandcheerful · 23/02/2015 10:39

My dd was 19mo before she was heavy enough to come out of the newborn carseat. She hated it as she wanted to sit up...

mejon · 23/02/2015 17:05

DD1 was 18m and DD2 around 17m I think. Their heads were at the top by then. Both went into a Maxi Cosi Tobi. DD1 stayed in that until she was 5 and I've just put DD2 into a harnessed Britax Evolva at 4 and approximately 13kg because I wasn't able to tighten the Tobi straps enough to stop her wriggling her arms out.

Skeeter3 · 25/02/2015 08:09

My dd is 26 months and still fits in her infant seat.

cantmakecarrotcake · 25/02/2015 13:30

My DD was in her infant seat until 22 months. She wasn't the minimum weight for her extended rear facing seat until then.

She was delighted when we moved her up as she could see out of the windows and kept telling me things she could see :-)

Now at 4 she's a long way from being able to move up to a HBB but she'll be kicked out by her not-so-little sister before long.

CaurnieBred · 25/02/2015 13:33

DD was in hers until she was 18 months old and in the next stage 5 point harness until she was almost 5. We had a mirror attached to the seat so she could see us - it was one of those curved ones so she could still see out the side windows too.

Mrscog · 25/02/2015 13:40

Ds was in a Maxi cosi pebble with base (it was able to be quite upright on the base) until 21 months - but it is a 0+ seat which goes up to 13kg. I would always advise a group 0+ seat over a group 0 - they seem to last much longer.

FreeButtonBee · 25/02/2015 13:40

my twins were in the infant seats until 18 months and could have lasted longer but for a rear end shunt that meant we had to replace both seats (ouch). So we got the Britax dualfix. ERF, more upright and higher up than an infant seat and can become FF later on if and when we have to.

I must admit that I was in two minds about spending the cash on ERF seats (particularly for two of them) but the accident made us really really aware of how much safer rear facing is. They were both totally fine after the accident but we were hit by a big van and certainly my DH had some minor whiplash. At least, the kids were pushed into their seats rather than pulling away from their harnesses. There was no question after that that we'd spend the money.

MyBootsAreMuddy · 25/02/2015 13:52

DS3 was in his infant seat until he was 2.6 yrs, and even then he still had room left but his 16 month twin siblings were getting too big for their infant seats. He was moved into an extended rf seat which he loved as it sits slightly higher in the car so he had a better view out of the window.
He will be 5 in April and is still in his erf seat and will be for some time yet as he has a growth disorder and at his last check up 2 months ago was measuring 84cm and weighed 11.6kg. I haven't tried him but I wouldn't be surprised if he would still fit in his old infant seat (britax babysafe)
