9 Week baby no smile

baby was born at 36+5 weeks, she is 9 weeks and hasn't really gave us a proper smile. 2 weeks ago I thought she was trying but nothing since, I think this may have been mistaken by wind but it wasn't like the obvious wind smiles you see. Is this normal?

My DS was born at 36 weeks and didn't smile til 10 weeks old. He's totally fine developmentally. Fear not.

Yep since your baby was born at 36+5, I wouldn't expect a smile till she is 9 weeks 2 days earliest (ie 6 weeks from her due date). And I wouldn't worry unless she gets to say, 13+ weeks and hasn't smiled at all...

Ahh thank you for making me feel better :) fingers crossed those smiles aren't too far away xx

Yes you do have to adjust for due date, those extra days make a big difference.

Ds2 born at 38+10 and smiled at 4 weeks which just shows he was ready to come out 2 weeks earlier and just spent the extra time in utero loafing around and puttng on weight

My dd2 didn't do a smile I was confident was a smile until way older than you'd expect. I think about 4-6 months. She'd do a little smile-like as you said trying to do one, and I'd think "that's one", then she's stop and I'd have doubts.

She was a very serious baby, but since the age of about 5yo people have said she's very smiley, but I didn't get a picture of her smiling until her preschool one aged 3.6yo. She had a good glare though. Grin
Dd1 otoh smiled dead on 5 weeks very clearly, and after that you could get her to smile on demand, so it was very different.

I did stop worrying about dd2's lack of smile when she started crawling, at 5 months,

My DS was the grumpiest baby ever and didn't really get much of a smile until 11 weeks. Even then it was bloody hard work! It was embarrassing sometimes being out with other mums and their smiley babies and when little old ladies would coo and try and make him smile only to be met with his death stare!

He's 14 months now and is the cheekiest, smiliest little chap. Some babies just take a bit longer to grin! Grin

It's fine. My baby was 35 weeks and smiled at 12 weeks

ConcreteElephant · 14/02/2015 09:34

Don't worry, it's normal. DD was born at 36+6 and was around 9-10 weeks when we got a smile. Not a moment too soon I can tell you! It had been a tiring road to that point and it made such a difference to morale :)

My twins were born at 34 weeks. Both only smiled at 11 weeks.

My 36 weeker smiled from 2 weeks which just goes to show the variation in normal. If 6 weeks is average then some will be earlier, some later. You also have to adjust for personality, temperament and birth date. You can see the variation just in a few replies on one thread.
