4.2yo Dd PETRIFIED of falling down the toilet

Hi everyone,

I just don't know how to help her move on from this. When she was toilet training over a year ago she would happily sit on the toilet but last Spring something must have happened which freaked her out a bit and ever since she has insisted on using a toilet seat.

We have been happy to go along with it until now but it feels like it is getting silly. She starts reception in September and we still have to take the blinking toilet seat with us wherever we go.

Nursery have said that they are willing to encourage/reward any attempts to ditch the toilet seat there (they have tiny toilets) but she is just absolutely terrified and no promises of anything will even tempt her to try.

I went in with her this morning and promised to hold her and that I would not let her fall but she went completely rigid as soon as I lifted her, hysterical crying etc.

She doesn't have a very good sense of balance and took ages to stand/walk when she was younger because of a fear of falling.

I know it's just something that she has to decide for herself but I don't know what else I can do to help her see that she's not going to fall and that if she does it's not the end of the world.

Any ideas? I'm at the end of my tether with it :(

Has she got a step up stool? My Dd was very small for her age and couldn't reach the floor with her feet for ages, the step-up gave her a bit of security - 'in touch with the ground'. It might be worth trying.

Yes she has a step which helps with bum-wiping but hasn't proved effective without the toilet seat.
