How old was your child when they went into 'pull ups' type nappies ?

My DD is now 20.5 months. A few months ago she developed a penchant for putting her hands in her nappy and scooping out whatever was in there .

That has progressed now to undoing the tabs and pulling the nappy off at every available opportunity, meaning wet trousers at least 3 times a day. She usually undoes one tab fully so that the nappy is hanging off but it isn't easy to spot under trousers as until she does something and then onv I can see the discolouration etc.

I'm starting to lose my rag a bit with this and I'm wondering about pull ups nappies. I appreciate that taking them off when DD has had a poo isn't going to be pleasant (is it ever?!) but are there any drawbacks for using them with a child so young ? What age did yours go into them, if at all ?

TIA

Sorry for the dumb blonde typos

I never used them for ds1 and only a few times when potty training ds2.
I always put the boys in in a body suit over ordinary nappies, which stopped them getting the nappy off.
But now summer is coming perhaps you don't want that extra layer?
sorry if that isn't much help?

musica · 22/04/2004 10:42

I think with pull ups you can tear down the sides so if there's a poo, it's not as bad as trying to pull it over their legs!

WSM · 22/04/2004 10:45

We tend not to use body suits any more Iota, and like you say the warm weather is coming so I'm not keen to use the extra layer.

I'm hoping all these behaviours are signs of an earlyish potty trainer.....

Oddly enough wsm DS2 loved wearing pull-up nappies at that age - but then for some reason took against them and now (aged 2 and three quarters) won't have them at all UNLESS they are put on at nursery - and that's okay, apparently. ????

GillW · 22/04/2004 10:49

Just as you are considering - we went to pull-ups once ds developed the habit of unfastening his nappy. He was a little older than your dd - about 27 months probably - but it did solve the problem.

Mum2Ela · 22/04/2004 10:59

We used pull ups when DD was about 13 months as she went through a phase of not lying down at all to change her nappy, she would only stand. We still use them now and again but not as much as before.

My DD also likes to take her nappy off but I still put vests on her (sleeveless ones) as she isn't fond of jackets and coats.

As others said, you rip them down the side to get them off.

Oh, and there is a bit of sticky tape stuck in a loop to the bum of the nappy. It only took me 5 months to work out what it was there for!

WSM · 22/04/2004 11:05

What is it there for ?!

Oh go on, love, give them a try. Rip down the side and wrap up using the weird pully thing at the back. Anything is better than the current situation. Hugs.

Secur, it's the pulling the nappies off thats the problem here, not potty training.

I think i will give them a go,like you say MI, anything has to be better than the wet trousers/wet carpet situations I find myself in on a daily basis !

But I use nappies at night anyway so surely the pull ups are the same from a knowing you've wet yourself pov ?

I think you got the wrong end of the stick here secur. I would be using them as a 'stay on' alternative to normal nappies and not as a step of potty training, IYSWIM.

Sorry, posts crossed !!

S'ok secur, I know what you mean when you say don't use them when p/t.

We started using pull ups at whatever age it was that ds started hating lying down for nappy changes (about 20 months sounds about right, actually, maybe even slightly younger). SO much easier to change while he's standing up!

Incidentally, he still wears them at night now even though he's dry during the day. If anything, he's more aware at night and treats them as if they were proper knickers, going to the potty and yelling out "I've finished!" when he's done (gee thanks kid, can't you just put yourself back into bed ) but if he does have an accident in the night then it's not the end of the world (he's almost 3). Don't feel that using pull-ups slowed the process down at all, using potty at night was something ds instigated and not something we've pushed.

WSM · 22/04/2004 11:52

HELLO !!! I've just emailed you !

EJ doesn;t mind lying down for a nappy change. In fact, she lies down by herself on her mat if I ask her to !

wsm

dd was around 2 when we put her in Pampers Easy Ups and to answer your question no they have not helped train her early . She exhibited similar behaviour to your dd a year ago and she now is 31 months and despite attempts to train this week as yet is still unreliable. . They are pretty easy for them to pull down (elasticated at side) so I don't know if it would solve your problem. You can rip the sides to remove poo but if your dd is anything like mine she'll get there first and make a mess !! I tend to sit her on the potty and remove it carefully down her legs.

WSM · 22/04/2004 11:56

She'll even get her mat out from under the cot, lay the towel neatly on it and then lie down herself

Forgot to add the main reason we started using them was because dd wanted to come to the toilet with me and "try". I couldn't hack doing nappies vertically in public loos and she hasn't laid down for me to change for over a year!

WSM · 22/04/2004 11:58

OH GOD LIZS Please tell me that I don't have a whole year of this to go ?!

We only used them once my two were fairly reliably potty trained, we used them for long journeys or shopping trips and through the night when I was too nervous to let them try without a nappy - I don't think it delays things - ds just used to have a dry pull up in the morning - lots of dry ones and I didn't bother again. Ds went through a stage of undoing and removing his nappy - probably at around the same age - I just fixed the nappy in place with masking tape wound around the top (had to be removed with scissors though) for a few weeks until he stopped trying. When I stopped using the tape he didn't bother undoing his nappy again. Good luck!!

Evita · 22/04/2004 13:39

What about using those body suits that are sleeveless, just like little vests? They keep the nappy in place, keep fingers out of the way, but aren't too warm. You can just stick a pair of trousers / dress / skirt over the top.

aloha · 22/04/2004 14:06

Just started using them with ds (31 months) as he complains that the nappy sticky tags were 'digging into me) - he finds pull ups more comfortable and re poo, you can tear the sides so no different to taking off a normal nappy IME. However, he's not ready for potty training yet so that's not why I'm using them.
