What were your DCs first word and how old were they?

I don't know Blush He's only 15m and just starting to say some words, but I don't know at what point they count as real words and when they're just sounds he's copied.
He's said "no" for ages, but really just copying me. He also said "ca" (cat) and "du" (duck) a while ago, but I didn't know if that counted. I think I'm going with "gone" if he ever asks. I still have to pick an age though! Oh, and he thinks "ta" means "take this off me now".

NickyEds · 28/01/2015 16:03

Ds is 13 months and says "Daddy" to his Daddy clear and in context. No Mummy as yet. Booo. He can also say "tickle" which started off as being, well, tickle but now seems to be a generic happy term! He can also say "dirty" because he puts everything in his mouth and I obviously say it to him rather a lot Blush. Oh and his name, but really only "Daddy", "tickle" and "dirty" properly.

chan321 · 28/01/2015 21:03

My little one said mum around 8 months but has only recently put a meaning to it. She's now 13 months and can say mum, dad, nana, fish, yes, sit down (lol!) And her newest word - dirty... haha. Which she learnt when I taught her not to touch the kitchen bin x

fattymcfatfat · 28/01/2015 23:48

My kids have both said their first word at 8 months and both of them said nan! I dont think they really knew what it meant but they soon learnt as my mum thought this was brilliant and hugged them and kissed them every time! My ds is now 6 and never shuts uo! Hes like a little old man! And dd is 13 months and says mummy, daddy, her name, ds' s name and her dads real name then laughs her head off! She also says bath, duck, ta, hiya, tata and woof, and her favourite is "roar dinosaur" although dinosaur is pronounced disore!

muffpuff · 28/01/2015 23:53

DS' first context appropriate word was "No", said whilst tapping the dog on the nose for licking his face. He was 10 months.

DD's first proper word was "Liam" (DS) said whilst standing beside his bed where he was asleep. She was 9 months.

Lovelydiscusfish · 29/01/2015 09:01

Dd was around 12 months. First word was "dada" (applied to her father). Other early ones were "meep" (sheep), and "oh dear". Didn't say "mummy" for absolutely ages, though!

Andcake · 29/01/2015 09:14

About 15-16 months ds would do 'round round' if he saw anything doing that - 'row row' to get us to sing his favorite song 'this' with a point to get us to tell him what things were. Daddy followed shortly afterwards 'mummy' just before he was 2 - dp spent ages taking the piss out of the more and more complex words ds was saying before he got to mummy - 'think oh has ds just said hippopotamus - but hasn't said mummy' it took a trip away with another family where an older dc was using mummy for someone else for ds to start saying 'my mummy' which was his default for a while. He said his name on his 2nd birthday - now we can't shut him up day or night!

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 29/01/2015 09:52

DD is 14 months and can say mama, daddy, grandad (ganda), Peppa Blush, the name of our dog and 'whassat' (what's that). No real idea what came first or when though! She said mama and dada at about 7 months but I don't know if they were just sounds rather than words so I don't really count them. She can also do a good pig, duck, cow, sheep and dog impression!

LetThereBeCupcakes · 29/01/2015 11:09

Shoes, aged 11 months.

Guin1 · 29/01/2015 15:34

Hard to give an age as a lot of babble words sounded like real words, and hard to know if they are being said in context. The first were probably 'no' and 'up' (to be picked up). Other early ones were 'nummy' (yummy), clock, ball, bear, out, kack (quack) and digger. 'Daddy' definitely appeared well before 'mummy'.

fattymcfatfat · 29/01/2015 18:00

Just today my daughtrr has learnt toes and gandada

Jaffakake · 29/01/2015 18:00

Jack at about 10 months - it's the name of the cat & we shout at him quite a bit!

WineSpider · 29/01/2015 18:27

Gosh my DD is 15 months and doesn't say any meaningful words just noises. We talk to her all the time so I hope she catches up soon!

BackforGood · 29/01/2015 18:33

"No,dsname" - I presume he thought it was one word - he'd probably heard it quite a bit Grin
Can't quite remember how old, it was under 1, but he didn't say much else for a long time - just came out with that, clear as a bell!

neversleepagain · 29/01/2015 23:08

Twin 1 said "Mama"
Twin 2 said "Dada"

Happymum1985 · 30/01/2015 13:17

My DS is 14 months and the only word we have in context is 'this' (accompanied by a point). Out of context he says Mama and Dada and Yes, but these seem to be said at random. If I say bye bye or hello though, he waves, and if I say 'come to mummy' he puts his arms up and if I say light he will point at the light, but not say it. I think its a case of understanding more than I realise at the moment!

Mummyk1982 · 31/01/2015 07:58

DD said Dadda at 7 months- but has only just associated it's meaning recently at 9 months. She said Mumma at 8.5 months with associated meaning at the same time. We also get Nananananan which we believe to be 'no'- that's been since around 8.5 months too. Still awaiting any more :-)

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 31/01/2015 08:06

Comprehension is definitely better than speech at the moment. DD can fetch her shoes when asked, bring various different books to me (knows the difference between The Gruffalo and Peepo for example), runs to her highchair when I tell her it's dinner time and runs away from me when I say 'come and have your nappy changed' Smile.

No actual words from ds yet. He just babbles happily. He is 12 months. He does show understanding of what you are saying though.

Looking forward to the talking stage starting Smile

talita2101 · 14/02/2015 19:41

DD1- mum at 6 months and 10 days, bot bot at 9 months and socks(our cats name) just before she turned 1.
DD2- she's nearly 8 months and only dadadadadadada you get the picture lol

Showy · 14/02/2015 19:49

At 7 months or so both said dada but I don't think it really counted as it wasn't in context. Around the same time they both came out with their proper first words. DD's was 'look' and DS's was 'grandad'.

TwoOddSocks · 15/02/2015 16:20

Wasn't a distinct first word but babbling that turned into words around 12-14 months we realised his babbling would sound more like "mumumumum" for me "dadadadada" for his dad and "bubububub" for boobie. (Calling it that seemed cute when he was little less so at 18 months when his speech was very clear and he'd shout it out in public - bad planning on our part :))

GoatsHaveStrangeEyes · 15/02/2015 16:24

DS' first proper word was car at 10 months. I have it on video, always makes me smile.

BocaDeTrucha · 16/02/2015 12:53

Ds at about 13 months said "agua" (Spanish for water) and he does about 10 more now at 16 mo. Dh is Spanish and we are bringing ds up to be bilingual (at least trying to!) and so far his only English word is yeah.
