Hi all ...ino I'm probly over reacting and jumping to conclusions but after reading about retinoblastoma I noticed that on many of my daughters pics one pupil looks slightly off colour than the other ( it doesn't show on every photo) I'm gonna take her to the gp Monday but I'm just looking for reassurance that it's not this she doesn't have any other symptoms it's just purley on photos have any of you been in the same situation and found that it was nothing to worry about she's 13 months old thanks x

OP, I'm sure she is fine. Could you take her to an optician instead? I'm sure a GP would need to refer anyway?

seaoflove · 23/01/2015 21:44

The chances are very VERY slim. Apparently this effect happens a lot with phone pics? It's obviously worth checking out, but I wouldn't worry at all.

CatsClaus · 23/01/2015 21:52

almost every single time it is a reflection from the back surface area of the eye but do go have a word with either your GP or friendly optician, they should be able to get a look and check for you.

It's just that on the photos it's always the same eye that's what was making me worry iv always thought she had one pupil slightly more dialated but iv mentioned that to her doctor before it's only in certain light tho thanks for replys I feel abit better Iv just done a search n it seems that there are lots of worried mums that have posted about the same thing can you see the images I uploaded of her do you think that the colouring could just be the flash like you say x

It is a very rare form of cancer but it is always worth getting this checked just in case, as the prognosis is very good when it is caught early. If you pop into an optician tomorrow and explain what you are worried about they will most likely fit you in and check your LO for you. The optician (or doctor) would have to refer you if there was any cause for concern, but at least you will feel like you are doing something and hopefully you will have reassurance rather than waiting until Monday, as I'm sure it will play on your mind.

A lot of camera phones give the white glow effect when there is no cause for concern, and hopefully this is the case for your LO. Very good to be aware though as the more people who understand this can be an indication of retinoblastoma the better.

I hope you get reassurance OP and a good outcome.

helensburgh · 23/01/2015 22:06

Nowadays 99.999999% of the time it's normal and a camera artefact.

Optician can have a quick look but Gp be best.

CatsClaus · 23/01/2015 22:36

yes...it's the same eye as the eye is looking in the same direction in each photo causing the reflection.

if she was looking the other way it'd be in the other eye.

but do go get her checked. x

Rachulx · 23/01/2015 22:44

Thanks for your replys everyone I'm sure it's nothing but il get her checked at the opticians tomoro x

It is very rare but there are other conditions so I would definitely recommend getting her checked out.

My DS1's condition sometimes presents like this, but he has something very different. Hard, I know, but try not to worry over the weekend, nothing is likely to happen in the next couple of days.

Hope you get good advice soon though.

chocnomorechoc · 23/01/2015 23:32

there was a post about it today on the children's health board.

My children both have a change in the RB1 gene, making them more susceptible to retinoblastoma. We've had amazing care and monitoring. Try taking a flash photo from several angles, but definitely go to the GP or an optician if you are concerned.

PigeonPie · 24/01/2015 11:57

I should also say that DS1's condition was picked up at the school Reception eye test which was done by a team from the hospital.

My GP did say that it was unlikely that an optician would have picked bit up though, so if the optician's appointment isn't conclusive definitely go to the GP and ask for a referral to your local eye hospital.

Ineedacleaningfairy · 25/01/2015 13:25

I have been worried about this with my dc, they both have the occasional white eye in photos. I went to our gp who had a good look in their eyes and saw nothing ominous, I'm also going to an eye specialist with dc1 next week just to make sure.

With dc1 it was also mostly in one eye but I played around with my phone a bit and if I turned my phone the other way when taking a photo it was in the other eye!

It is likely that it's because of the led flash on your camera (google I phone white eye) but it's always best to get it checked.

Henbur1702 · 15/02/2015 06:26

Hi Rachul did you get her checked? X

hoppus · 15/02/2015 07:38

We had this exact problem with DD, always the same eye. In her case it turned out to be because one of her eyes is slightly turned, so the flash hits the eyes differently in some photos. Apparently phone cameras are worse for this sort of reflection.

Go to the GP who can refer you to paediatric opthalmology (may be spelt wrong!) they will dilate and look in the back of the eye.

One thing they told us is we would havenoticed other symptoms before it got to this stage if there was a problem, so if her vision seems fine then don't worry, but do still get checked.
