Hi

My son has just turned 5 months old- i have noticed that at the groups we attend he is the only baby of his age not to be rolling over - he refuses to go on his belly - really he is still lying on his back and ocasionally rolls onto his side - but otherwise not much else - he sits with help and has good head control when icarry him and in his door bouncer ( ionly use it for half an hour a day) -

should i be worried or just accpet part of normal variation in development - i have no worries otherwise and he smiles and giggles - takes objects given to him and babbles happily to himslf - he has also started sucking his thumb - please all advise gratefully recieved as i am starting to worry!!

My DS was ythe same - hes only rolled back to front a few times (now 6 1/2 months). Hes starting to love tummy time now though, and is crawling but thats only all very recent. Have you a playmat he can go on for tummy time? I have a Vtech thingy that DS can hit, and it lights up/plays music etc.

Dont worry, honestly... as I said, my DS has only done it a very few times

Sorry about typing, DS on lap

DD sounds exactly like your DS - same age too. She hates tummy time with a passion, but I'm not overly worried - they all get there at their own speed! Hope this helps put your mind at rest - it's so easy to worry that your baby is the only one not doing things.

gegs73 · 18/10/2006 15:35

My ds didn't roll over until he was 8 months, crawled when he was about 14 months and walked when he was 15 months! A very late starter in that respect but he did talk early maybe so he could bark out his orders. Don't worry they are all different, your son sounds fine .

DD started rolling v. early (around three months) and has been rolling over and over (especially on the blasted changing table!) for past two months now (she's 7 months). But her cousin, who is nine weeks older than her, doesn't roll at all and hates going on his belly. I don't think you've anything to worry about - it varies massively between babies and doesn't signify anything (except that I no longer have the luxury of turning my back for even a second because she'll be off rolling across the floor into certain peril...)

Rookiemum · 18/10/2006 16:01

In our baby group I have noticed that the babies who hate being on their tummies are now learning to sit very well at 6.5 months. ]

DS has no interest in sitting at all but is a little rolling devil. Personally I'd rather he was sitting because then he would have less interest in rolling around so he is constantly ramming fingers in DVD recorder, knocking over bathroom toilet cleaner and trying to knock himself out with an open drawer.

I don't think you have anything to worry about at all.

laundrylover · 18/10/2006 16:58

I agree with all the posters - don't worry. DD2 is nearly 7 months and still doesn't move off her back. She sat up before 5 months and thinks that this achievement is enough for now.

Enjoy it while you can before the little tyke is off out the door or under the coffee table the moment you turn your back.

thanks chaps - feel a lot better now

can't help being neurotic!!

I will try and chill out and not compare him to the other babies

hey furrytangerine. had exactly the same with my DS. Now 7 M. hated tummy time and whined and then cried... all felt too traumatic to put him on it - even though some people said I should I didn't want to make him do what he didn't want to. Then about 4 days ago he just started enjoying it. Even found him asleep in cot (snoring away) lying on his tummy. So don't worry ( I did, I realize now uneccessarily!). My tip is to play with him on his tummy on your bed. I think having a soft surface like that to play on made it more fun. And pull funny faces or do whatever it is that makes you two laugh. He won't be able to resist looking at you and even if it's just a tiny bit a day he'll start building up a bit of strength.

Boys are notoriously lazy !!!! They still are when they turn in to men !
I'm sure he'll do it all in his own time..

I have a similar problem with my DS (18 weeks). He keeps rolling over from his back onto his front but as soon as he gets onto his front he starts screaming! I try rolling him back but sometimes that makes him scream even more. Not sure if he is just getting frustrated that can't crawl or just hates being on his tummy. He never liked it when we put him on his tummy either so we more or less gave up on that. Wld welcome any thoughts or similar experiences. I guess he will just get used to it?

kbaby · 30/05/2007 10:32

DS was the same. Screamed if he was on his tummy and absolutely hated it. However he sat up at 5 1/2 months and startd crawling from a sitting position at 9 months. Not having tummy time seems to have had no bearing on his development.

They do say though to alter their position ie bouncy chair, toys put to the side of them and propped up etc to avoid the back of the head getting flat.

carocaro · 30/05/2007 13:08

sounds like my 4.5 month old, not keen at all on his front, what he does like however is being pulled up from a lying down position by his hands till he is upright on his feet, he looks so pleased with himself and this helps his neck muscles develop according to a physio mate of mine. He kicks back his knees to his chest and stands tall, only for a few moments, but he could do it all day! Good to hear advice from the others!

Louplet · 31/05/2007 21:40

good to know I am not alone! Carocaro - that sounds really interesting but doesn't it hurt his arms?

pudding77 · 31/05/2007 21:48

My ds used to hate it on his tummy also but I would put a rolled up towel underneath his chest, about level with his armpits so that he was propped up slightly, only for about 10 mins or so, so he could get used to it. Soon after that, he was rolling over and crawling.

But its not a worry & he will get there soon enough

fizzbuzz · 31/05/2007 21:54

Dd rolled once at 6 months, and HATED being on her tummy.

Started rolling non stop about 3 weeks ago at 10 months, and is now bloody crawling EVERYWHERE. Enjoy it whilst you can!

She tried to climb in tumble dryer today, and heads for plug sockets and cables like a heat seeking missile!

mm22bys · 31/05/2007 22:43

I have a simlar problem with my DS2 (around 6 months). He hates being on his tummy and just falls asleep each time (there's denial for you...)

I am propping him up so he can "sit" and also putting a toy in front of him when he's on his tummy and today he did actually lift his head a little (before he fell asleep that is..)

I think my DS is (slowly) getting there...I am sure your DS will too - it sounds like he is developing well in other areas!
