Language development at 14 months

DD is nearly 14 months. I know I am probably worrying about nothing but would like to be sure and maybe some thoughts on what I can do more.

DD I feel might be behind in language development. She babbles all the time, bababa is a particular favourite but in terms of actual words we aren't getting much. I don't think she is using mama and dada for us just indiscriminately. Sometimes she will say ba for ball but also use ba for zillion other things. Again, we can get dar for car but dar is used all the time as her babble so not 100% whether it's just that or she is trying to say car.

Her understanding is good in that she can clap on demand, point to various body parts, etc.

What can I do to help her say words. We try and talk to her and also tell her different words to try and get her to repeat them.

I have to say I think you are worrying a little.

Babbling is a good sign.

My DD has made HUGE leaps in speech development in the last 2 months - 16mo is when words started becoming really identifiable - and she is now 18 mo and still not everything is clear.

Babbling is good.

I would suggest talking to her lots (constant running commentary if you can manage it!), reading loads and singing rhymes.

That sounds right. In the nexy month you'll start getting odd words, then build up to 2 - 3 word sentenses.

Have a little look at the eyfs if your worried but I wouldn't be if I was you.

As an aside, I work with a 4 year old who said their first word at 18 months, didn't speak properly until just before their 3rd birthday and now doesn't stop talking!

I also have a 13 month old and you are definitely worrying over nothing. Her language will improve just talk lots to her and encourage when she does say something even if irs not quite right. My dd loves to natter away to me most of it is utter nonsense but there are a couple of words in there. I just agree with her nonsense...she shouts if I dont haha. But what you describe is perfectly normal.

Mine is 15 months I can tell that sometimes she tries to repeat back some words however these are certainly not words she has not said her first word and in spite of thinking she's trying I think it'll be a while still. She can't point to various body parts. I'm not worried. I'm enjoying the stage she's at now.

Sounds bout right to me!

My DS is 14 months and just babbles away! We have plenty of 'conversations' which is good, but none are in the same language! Don't stress!

DC1 at 14 months didn't babble. He had a couple of words when he was 2.

DC2 was stringing a good few words together and had a vocab of well over 100 words at 14 months.

By 3 you wouldn't have known there was such a marked difference in their speech development.
