I have the first clinic visit for my 4 week old DD coming up and apparently I have to weigh her myself. What actually happens at this appointment? I have had the health visitor visit me since my DD was born but I now have to visit the clinic and I am slightly nervous about the whole thing.

Usually you go along to the clininc and they weigh baby for you, ask if you have any concerns and have a little chat. There is nothing to worry about, it's not much different to them comming out to the house but you do get to meet other mums and have a chat.

what yhappens at our clinic is you hand your red book in at the door, you get your baby undressed and when he/she is called you place them in the scales. HV (or other suitabley trained person) records weight in red cbook, you go back to mat and change baby and HV will bring your book over. You can then either stay to speak to HV or go home. If you're having jabs then you stay anyway and get called through.

At least, thats how it is where i am. Really nothing to worry about.

If you're a first time mum it's prob worth asking whether they run post-natal courses. OUr health authority did, for 8 weeks fro when dd was 6 weeks at they were fantastic:

  1. you have a set routine that on a thursday (say) you have to be somewhere (both dressed, bag packed) by 10am.
  2. you meet ther mums with babies the same age. You're all knackered, you're all emptional, you can have a good moan to each other
  3. hey presto - great network of support. My post-natal group knocked the socks of NCT because we all had a baby at the same time, and we really clicked. 3 years later we still catch up regularly, and are mostly now onto our second children.
