8mo not at all mobile

Hello all,

Probably just a paranoid first timer here but am beginning to be concerned that, compared with his peers, my 8mo DS shows absolutely no sign on becoming mobile in anyway. He has been sitting happily without support for around 6 weeks, but nothing more. He has rolled both ways previously but now seems to have forgotten how to do that and has always absolutely hated tummy time (and still does).

In all other ways he appears to be fine (growing, eating, babbling etc) but just not moving anywhere - or even looking like he might at any point. My mum has told me that I was a late mover and not to worry but it's hard when most babies of a similar age are crawling and even cruising.

Should I speak to a HV or just chill out??!

My DS didn't crawl til 10months. Didn't pull up until nearly a year. Only started cruising at 14 months. He's now 15months and has no interest in walking unless to push his walker. However he's chatty, into everything.
If your DS is doing other stuff - waving toys, interested in things I wouldn't worry. Just enjoy the fact that he's more portable, you don't need shoes and he won't object to sitting on your lap in coffee shops and you don't have to walk places at toddler speed just yet... If you have concerns about other development areas then worth a chat but they all do things at different rates

dm86 · 15/01/2015 15:33

Don't worry they all do things in there own time! My dd didn't crawl until the week after her 1st birthday and I was getting worried then! She's 7 now and perfectly normal lol! Smile

WUME · 15/01/2015 18:13

Dd3 is almost 12 months. She rolled over for the first time when she was 4 months and then didn't do it again for ages.

At her nine month check, I expressed my concerns to the HV about her lack of movement - sitting up independently with the odd roll around. HV wasn't concerned, said maybe DD3 was concentrating on her fine motor skills rather than her gross ones.

In the last four weeks she has learned to crawl properly, can pull herself up on the sofa and walk along the sofa holding on.

She just saved it all up and did it all at once!

ChristmasPuddin · 15/01/2015 18:19

My DD didn't roll till 11 months, didn't crawl till 13 months and walked at 18 months. At no stage did anyone express concern over it.

I don't think you need to start worrying for ages yet!

HollyBen · 15/01/2015 19:25

DD was sitting before most of her peers. She was quite content with that. Crawled (backwards) around 9 months, forward at 10. She rolled over twice at 3 months then never did it again until she started pulling herself up to walk at 14 months. Now at nearly 4 i yearn for those days when she sat a played quite contently Smile

seaoflove · 15/01/2015 19:27

My DD didn't crawl until 10.5 months, and didn't bear any weight on her legs at all until after her first birthday. Don't worry Smile

Allstoppedup · 15/01/2015 19:31

Loads of the babies in DS's baby groups didn't crawl at 8 months. They are all crawling/cruising or walking now at a year. Dont worry, your LO sounds fine!

Borttagen · 15/01/2015 19:41

Sorry to disagree with everyone else but I was in a similar position (although my LO couldn't sit unsupported) and I listened to HV saying he was concentrating on other areas and peoples stories of other late developers but it turned out not rolling should be a red flag and as it turned out my DC has a disability. It was diagnosed eventually anyway but I really regret the wasted time when we could have been having physio.
I would push for a referral to a paed, your DC is more than likely fine but better to get things checked sooner IMO. I found that after diagnosis all the medical professionals were telling me that the not rolling was a bigger issue than not crawling.

fionnthedog · 15/01/2015 21:15

Hi all, thanks for your advice and support. I'm sure he's fine but it is also good to hear your story borttagen. Looking back were there other signs? As I said, DS has been sitting unaided since 6.5 months and has rolled previously but not anymore.

I do think it's too early for a referral. My Ds crawled at 7 months but that was really early compared to his little friends. Most of them didn't crawl til at least 10 months, and a couple didn't bother and went straight to walking!!

ch1134 · 16/01/2015 20:54

Similar to pp. My ds crawled at 6 months and still is now at 12 months! Some of his peers didn't get going til 10 or 11 months and now they all seem similar.

0ddsocks · 16/01/2015 20:59

My DS is one tomorrow and has only been crawling for a month. He also didn't roll from front to back till 8mo-ish and from back to front later than that.

He's now crawling loads, standing and cruising round furniture.

I really wouldn't worry OP

Littlef00t · 16/01/2015 21:02

My dd is 10 mo and I got a txt from nhs saying not to worry if baby not crawling yet.

2tired2bewitty · 16/01/2015 21:10

Dd1 didn't crawl until she was 15m and was 22m before she walked. I did get a referral to a paed but not until she was 19m old (nobody was officially worried until then). She was diagnosed with mild hypermobility but the only difference you will see between her and her peers now at 5 is that she's a bit slow on stairs.

8m old dd2 is the exact opposite and its a bit of a shock to the system!

2tired2bewitty · 16/01/2015 21:13

My favourite piece of MN advice on this subject is 'you never see someone walking down the street and think , wow, they're good at walking, I bet they started young' Grin

purpleme12 · 17/01/2015 08:58

I'm always surprised at how many people worry about things like this. Mine didn't sit til couple of days before turning 10 months. OK she was rolling before then and then at 10 months bum shuffled

bugoven · 18/01/2015 07:50

This is a very helpful thread, thank you OP and good to have some reassurance. My DS has just turned 5 months today and many, many people ask if he has rolled over yet. He hasn't but he is definitely working on his fine motor skills and is very chatty =)

cheapandcheerful · 20/01/2015 11:29

Normal

HeyheyheyGoodbye · 20/01/2015 11:31

My friend's DS couldn't sit up unaided at 9mo and then one day just randomly started standing up and cruising! I'm sure your DC is fine :)

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 20/01/2015 11:34

The little boy I nanny for didn't crawl at all and didn't walk till 17 months, I don't remember him rolling over much either, he was happy sitting or lying on his back so didn't feel the need to move.

He could however hold a full conversation by 14 months unlike his sister who walked at 10 months but had a limited vocabulary till she was over 2.

They are all different so try not to compare him to his peers

fionnthedog · 20/01/2015 16:40

Thanks again everyone. It is really good to be supported in this way. DS is 9 months on Saturday and I am hoping to continue to chill out and trust that he will get there in his own time unless I see any other worrying signs.

LittleBearPad · 20/01/2015 16:49

Dd never rolled until she started crawling at about 10 months. She walked on her first birthday.

oobedobe · 20/01/2015 18:58

Don't worry! DD2 didn't sit well until 8months, crawled a week before she turned one and walked at 17 months, you would never know it now - she did have good fine motor skills though from all that sitting/playing!
