seen by my hv several times in the past few months, the first time was for his two year check, but he was quite unhappy and didn't want to take part so she made another visit

She has referred him to speech and hearing therapy and also a pediatrician for his behaviour which she said seemed quite challenging, she asked about his diet, sleep patterns etc.

He does not sleep some days until 3am but has no afternoon sleep, and seems full of energy all time, he can speak but only a few single words and no sentences, he constantly says why, but he does hear me because he turns his head when I call his name.

I do have to put him in my bed because he just jumps around screaming, I have tried techniques for bed time routines and he's just not interested, he would have to share a bedroom with his brother 11 but this is impossible and my other son needs to sleep, night time is a nightmare and I do find it hard but we manage he rocks from side to side while laid down and smacks me when I am lying with him, this goes on for ages, sometimes he settles if I rub the side of his face or his back gently, but if I stop he has a full blown tantrum and screams the house down.

He plays with his cars and does line them up, he likes to spin the wheels on them, but will play with other toys too, eating is fine, he's a good eater.

He likes to spin sometimes and his eyes go to the side when he does, but constantly screams. Oh and he likes anything chaotic, for instance, if Tom and Jerry is on and they maybe crash into a wall he laughs and laughs.

I'm not saying anything is wrong I am just asking myself why she has referred him that's all, I have looked at autisim and I asked if it could be that and she said she couldn't say. He doesn't have a lot of autisim traits that's why I dont think it will be. Just looking for advice and feedback ... Thank you everyone and hope I haven't mumbled on too

She shouldn't express an opinion on whether he has autism because that is a decision that can only be made after a neurodevelopmental assessment.

The traits you have described are common in children with autism. The sleeping issues have been a killer for me. However, autism affects lots of areas of a child's development and an assessment will look at his play, developmental history, speech and language skills, social communication, etc and build a comprehensive picture of him before a judgement is made.

Getting this referral now is a good thing. I hope the waiting lists aren't too long.

There are a lot of behaviours, there, particularly sensory seeking ones, that are common in autism.

DS1 ate really well at that age, so long as the food was colourful. He was on an anti-beige diet :o

HV cannot diagnose and rule out autism. A few of the things you described remind me of my DC with autism. But in your case it might be autism, something different or maybe nothing. Good on your HV on noticing thibgs and putting referrals in place.

Hope you get some answers soon!

Thank you for the replies, he's a lovely little boy. And I adore him to bits but I was just concerned because he is slightly different from my other three children.

He hides my phone in the same place when I leave the room, and is constantly pressing buttons, I am just glad things are moving forward. We live in Hull, I'm not sure what the waiting times are like because I am completely new to all this.

Have you looked up the triad of impairments and thought about if he meets them all, for someone his age obviously.

carlywurly · 08/01/2015 17:09

The chat test is a little easier to understand than the triad if you're new to this and is also age appropriate.

It helped me when ds was small. If you google it, you should be able to find it fairly easily.

Hope you get the answers you need.

Hurr1cane · 08/01/2015 17:12

Thanks Carly! I knew there was something more age appropriate but had a complete mental block on what it was.

The M-CHAT test

I received a letter today to say my son has been refered to cic for a paediatric medical assessment, but it has to be discussed at the next allocations meeting. Does this mean that there is a chance he won't be seen at all?

Regards

Kelly.
