Speech development : How much should a just 2 year old say?

DS 2.2y started nursery 2 months ago. Today his carer asked me wether he says much at home. This made me think and I'm wondering how much exactly should he be saying?

His vocabulary is very limited, i.e.
Clearly spoken:
Mama
Daddy
Car
Bus
Tschutschu
NO
Yes

Sort of phonetic approximations of:
thank you
you're welcome

Otherwise he's VERY noise and loves shouting and screaming in a happy way but doesn't seem to attempt to form sentences etc.

DD was a late talker (3y to start putting words together in sentences) as well but as far as I remember she had a bigger one word vocab be it including made up words.

Anybody know how much he should be babbling? Should I go have him checked out?

Cheers

Officially it is 50-200 words. I am clued up on this because dd, now 2.9, said nothing at 2 except "no", and didn't really start speaking until 2.3. She now has a large vocab (over 200 words) but has been referred for SALT for lack of clarity.

You could see your HV. They might say wait until 3 year check (which dd has just had). It's worth asking. The waiting list for SALT is pretty long in our area.

Not saying he needs SALT of course. He says more than dd at that age!

BBAS thanks for that I'm maintaining it's because my kids are being spoken to bi-lingually. My mum reckons he might be hard of hearing because he kept ignoring him when we visited. I just think he's very focussed when playing and chose to ignore her . Didn't get worried when my mum mentioned it but now his care worker asking whether he talks more at home... gets one worried doesn't it

Blimey, in my book he is doing well.
My ds1 did not say a word until he was 2 1/2.
I was just told he was a late developer...

Hope I didn't worry you MrsBigD. I know what you mwean about the carer asking. Dd had her check and I was all set to ask for a referral, but then the HV said she would do it without any prompting and I was quite upset. Daft!

If he is speaking, and speaking clearly I'm sure he'll do fine. Once they get going it all comes very fast. Dd went from one to 200+ in a couple of months almost.

MrsBigD · 13/10/2006 19:55

becky you didn't scare me I was wanting him to have a checkup anyhow - dd had one at 18 months but that seems to have been scrapped by the ever vigilant NHS .

He still steadfastly refuses to sleep through the night so thought maybe they could give me some valium?

He says more than my 2.4 yo! DS2 understands everything though, & does terrific animal impressions. But, at a guess, he has fewer than 10 spoken words.

Bozza · 13/10/2006 21:42

I remember that at 2 my DS had 30 words. I checked this out at the time because he was under assessment for glue ear. Now at 5 (3 lots of grommets and an adenoidectomy later, mind you) he has an excellent vocabulary and is learning lots of interesting new words at school.

DD on the other hand has a lot more words. She is 2.5 and is talking in short sentences. Although they do say younger siblings tend to be later with their talking.

7up · 13/10/2006 21:53

my ds 2 on sunday , mainly says "i want it", car, bus, cuggle (cuddle), mum, hurt, dummy, "up here/there",no, mower (lawnmower)

he speaks a lot more than my eldest who didnt really talk clearly till he was 3

PizPizPiz · 13/10/2006 22:02

MrsBigD, I'll add my bit because my just 2y old dd is also being raised biligually. She has French and English vocab and can form 3 word sentences in each. BUT this is very recent. About 2 months ago she only had about 50 words and couldn't form sentences. But she's very curious of new words and is working a lot on her pronunciation

MrsBigD · 13/10/2006 23:01

Thanks for all your input

Pizpizpiz... lucky you! dd (nearly 5) still refuses to speak German because 'she's too little'
