...And how long is it generally between crawling and them walking?

7.5-8.5 months, walked 6 weeks later.

HearMyRoar · 23/12/2014 11:17

amelia my dd was the same. She wasn't mobile at all until the week of her first birthday. We took to a settling in session at nursery and she saw all the other children walking about and decided it looked like something worth doing after all. That week she just got up and started walking. It took her a few months to learn to crawl after that, it was only when she realised it was useful for getting under things she gave it a go Hmm

Bottom shuffled, never crawled until he was three! Walked at two years and five days old.

Mulligrubs · 23/12/2014 11:35

Commando crawling from 5 months, crawling 'properly' at 6. He was so active and never content being still though, he could roll the length of a room at 4 months to get to things.

Mulligrubs · 23/12/2014 11:36

He walked at 11 months.

Leviticus · 23/12/2014 11:42

8 months/15 months
11 months/17 months

Why, as a species, do our babies have such a wide variation in when it's normal to learn to walk?
Do chimpanzee babies vary hugely in when they reach their developmental goals?

BentleyBelly · 23/12/2014 16:26

My dd crawled at 13 months and now at 16 months she can walk with a trolley when the mood takes her but is showing no interest in walking on her own. We saw a paediatrician for something else and he was unconcerned, said she may not walk till 2 and that was in the realms of normal.

CalamitouslyWrong · 23/12/2014 16:32

I don't actually know about chimpanzees, but in humans it's because child development is not simply driven by maturation. It is hugely plastic in relation to environmental factors (material, social, cultural, etc) and children themselves are very individual.

Twin girls born at 34 weeks. Both crawled at 12 months. Twin 1 walked at 16 months, twin 2 at 14 months.

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 23/12/2014 23:16

There is no normal with crawling.

I think average age for walking is about 14 months (with a lot earlier and a lot later being in the normal spectrum).

Believe me, crawling is a pain. IME, the later they crawl the better, as it makes the crawling stage shorter!

lightgreenglass · 23/12/2014 23:21

DS never crawled properly - tried to drag himself around the room but not quite commando crawling. Walked at 9 months.

PoppySausage · 23/12/2014 23:22

Never
Bum shuffled from 8-14 months then walked

coppertop · 23/12/2014 23:26

Mine ranged from 7mths for crawling through to never crawling at all.

Oddly enough, it was the early crawler who turned out to be the one with poor muscle tone.

For walking they ranged from 12mths through to 16mths.

The earliest to crawl was also the last to walk.

lemonpoppyseed · 23/12/2014 23:37

DS commando crawled from 9 months, crawled at 12 months (when we visited family with carpet; we have wooden floors throughout our house), and walked at 18 months.

Lweji · 23/12/2014 23:50

A couple of weeks before he walked. At about 10 months.

He didn't even bum shuffle. He was used to sitting (also fairly early sitter) and suddenly just crawled.

DeWee · 24/12/2014 01:44

DD1 9.5 months crawling 15 months walking (and then walked everywhere within a week)
Dd2 6 months crawling, 8 months walking (but would crawl still if ill or tired until she was about 15 months.
Ds 6.5 months crawling, could walk at 10 months, but generally chose to crawl (usually pushing a car) until 18 months.
