just put on new dvd of baby einstein (van gogh, colours) and DD of 5 months is transfixed, even laughing and getting excited. suddenly feeling really guilty? Last thing i want is a child that watches tonnes of TV and i've gone and started her off at 5 months...

anyone have any views on this?

forget the plastic, how about the fact it's a toilet brush!!!

hello, my DS is 2 and a half and still loves Baby Einsteins, and is bright as a button and with very good vocabularly and can hum/recognise a lot of classical music. I got a set of 20 (!) some of them are just coming into their own now - there's a lovely one called Baby Galileo, all about stars, planets, the moon etc. So I urge you all not to worry - this is genuinely educational stuff. Last time we went out for dinner, a good friend was raving about them too and we raised a glass to Julie Aigner Clark. I hope that woman made a stack of cash out of giving all of us a quiet half-hour :-)

seriously though, if your babies are too little for treasure baskets, how about baby gyms? you can attach extra rattles/toys etc I found them great (esp. when DS just dozed off on them...)

TheBlairAitchProject · 11/10/2006 20:48

my dd absolutely loves her treasure basket, she plays with it every day. it's easy to keep stocked up, just clear out some drawers and ask your family if they've got junk floating about when you're round. you all take the piss if you want, but DD will happily sit for half an hour turning bits and pieces around in her hands and chewing things in the kitchen while i get on with dinner.

i'm not against baby mozart either, though, my friend has it and it has a similar effect to the basket, totally fascinates her. i've been too mean to buy it, but i'm off to have a peek at ebay right now...

MissyBabee · 11/10/2006 20:54

time4tea, did you get those 20 on ebay...? i just wondered if they were the real thing.
also, i like the uk english version, not american. is yours uk or us?

ooh i like the treasure box idea. dd is only just able to sit up for short periods but i think i'll get one sorted. we looked round the nursery she'll be going to the other day and i noticed they had what you'd call treasure boxes, only they called them cultural instruments?! but they were just baskets of shells, string etc. thanks mums!

pointyfangedWeredog · 11/10/2006 21:08

"forget the plastic, how about the fact it's a toilet brush!!!" [grin} missyb.

That's a sign of spending too much time on mn - when the idea that people might find plastic more shocking than a toilet brush doesn't seem like such a ridiculous idea.

pointyfangedWeredog · 11/10/2006 21:09

That was

Macdog · 11/10/2006 21:21

couldn't have survived without baby beethoven!!
dd loves it, but doesn't get to watch too often.
i keep for emergency calming/distracting!!
we also have baby mozart and neptune
there are worse things in the world you could do to children, like let them watch bloody Granny Murray, honeypie!!

The ebay bidding war begins .....

MissyBabee · 11/10/2006 21:26

it's just that i mentioned i'd bought the dvd to a friend last week and she replied 'god, she's not watching tv already is she????' and the guilt began...

Oh I like the treasure box idea too Franny. Can we start a thread for ideas of what to put in it. Don't think my imagination will stretch to 100 items . In fact I'll start a thread now.

CastsSpellsWitchySpells · 11/10/2006 21:39

Treasure Box thread is here if anyone wants to look/contribute.

FrannyandZooey · 11/10/2006 22:14

Great thread idea CastsSpells

Hildysmum all of the items I am about to suggest on the other thread are safe for a 4 month old with adult supervision.

FrannyandZooey · 11/10/2006 22:22

(However I do personally agree that 4 months is a little young to get much from the activity - I normally suggest from 5 months, and most children will be older before they can explore a treasure basket with any degree of independence)

hildysmom · 11/10/2006 22:46

cheers.
i'm off to the treasure box thread then.

Rookiemum · 12/10/2006 09:32

Just to say I got our Baby Einstein DVDs from Ebay for about £6.00 each. I'm not altogether sure they were authentic as they didn't come in a box, but surely trading standards would be on to the sellers if they weren't genuine.

Rookiemum coughs and leaves thread quickly .......

MissyBabee · 12/10/2006 09:43

well, if you keep checking amazon, they go up and down in price. the other day they were £16ish and the next they were £8! i bought my vangogh one for about £8 and it is english english, ie not american. if i knew the ones on ebay were english, i'd get them. if anyone finds out if they are american or english, can you please let me know?

hello, I did get my set off Ebay, like a friend. we paid about £35 for the set of 20. they have japanese/korean as well as English (US) option. However, they work fine. I was a bit concerned about american english, but actually having compared some, for example, Baby Shakespeare, the English voice they use reads the poems without any expression at all, and the American voice reads them beautifully. so I don't think it really matters.

curlew · 12/10/2006 21:16

We had treasure baskeks for both of mine - they were wonderful. It's great fun finding things to go into them. We used to have a smaller basket to take out with us - with 20 or so things. It was wonderful in restaurants and places like that - bought us many peaceful half hours. If they can't sit up for long, use a V pillow.
