We have been using ASL (we live in the states) but need to know the british baby signs for:

eat
more
drink
light/ lightswitch
bird

Can anyone describe them?

eat-pinch fingers and thumb together with fingers on top. tap them against your mouth
drink- mime with cup
bird- make beak shape with your fingers and thumb(as if you had glove puppet on)and make the 'mouth' open and close
light and more are hard to describe, maybe someone else can help or give you a weblink

for more, you put your hands in front of you, slightly cupped with palms facing inwards, one in front of the other. Then tap the front hand against the other a couple of times.

(I think!)

I think (IIRC) that for light, you hold your hand in a fist near your head, then quickly spread your fingers wide with your palm facing downwards (as if your fingers are rays of light coming from a desk lamp, if that helps).

try deaf club search engine
they have some info on baby signing

milk - mime milking a cow
Please and thank you place hand on chin and move downwards please to your knees and ta to your bra is the way we were taught to remember it.

We use mainly makaton in the hill house to help baby communicate also try looking here at something special It is a childrens programme that helps teach makaton.

Wow - thanks for the speedy replies. Some of these are similar to what we use already, thankfully.

'Light' makes sense, CarolinahowlingattheMoon, and Mymmuhill, I meant to ask about please & thank you but forgot!

How do BSL & Makaton differ?

hot i think is flat hand, palm towards face and quickly touch middle finger off bottom lip
cold i think is use 2 hands to wrap imaginary clothing around and 'huddle'
feel free to correct me people, it's been a while since i've used signing

mummyscaryhouseonthehill · 12/10/2006 00:01

Makaton is specifically for children it uses simpler signs which can be used effectivley by children with special needs as well.

mummyscaryhouseonthehill · 12/10/2006 00:03

Hot is shown on the something special link I gave you under baby signs.

mamamaaargh · 12/10/2006 02:48

Thanks again - I watched lots of the videos on the link Mummyhill, but must have missed hot. Wil have another look. Great descriptions, Macdog - thanks.

I think Makaton & Babysigns are very similar, so it looks like we're ok
